Roman hobnails
« on: March 10, 2015, 06:07:23 pm »
Good morning,
I'm looking for informations about roman hobnails. They are very common but poor investigated. But Romans leaved it in all your Empire, expecially lost on the imperial street (and in its military settlements).
They are made in iron but how they were made?
They have a "pin" and a "head"; the surface in contact with the leather was smooth, with points (4 or more...), with crucified motif or mixed (points/crosses).
How the Romans made this motifs? With the help of a die?

This is the only text (in spanish) I have found...

Could you help me?

Thanks so much
Illyricum

Everything you wanted to know about hobnails - including manufacture, patterns, typology, etc - as long as you can read French.

Thanks for posting that article.  I have no hobnails myself but I do have plenty of the large and medium nails covered in that article.
