unknown coin
« on: March 02, 2015, 09:15:01 am »
Hello
Here's a hard one,
All i can see is some sort of an "8"
Anyone has any idea what this coin can be?
It has 14 mm and 3.5 grams, quite small and bulky
Thank you all

Perhaps a bit more cleaning can be done?;)

It's like a cloud, it can be anything you want it to be.  :)

I've used a cleaning solution that worked well for other coins, but it really doesn't remove the dirt from this one.
It seems like cement.
What can i do? (something really powerful)

Time, patience, soak in oliveoil and once more time and and a lot of patience and more oliveoil.

Boiling in soda solution with detergents and soaking in that warm solution for some hours, followed by a soft brass brush treatment til the details are visible - but not destroyed.

I think I see a facing head of a woman, perhaps Hera, on the second coin.  You might give the coin a soak in vinegar for a day or two.  That will frequently begin to break up the lime in a thick mass of corrosion products like this.

Some of the brown on the coin could be removed.  I'm not fond of acids myself, so I use one of those metal picks very carefully and wiping frequently.

Here's how it looks after staying in vinegar.
I can see some sort of E on the top of the 2nd picture.

Ha, I can't believe that I got it!....needs more cleaning though

From the latest pictures:

rotate the 1st of the last  two pictures 90' to the right
rotate the 2nd of the last two pictures completely upside-down

Obverse: Helmeted head of Athena right
Reverse: Owl standing right, head facing

Likely from Attica, Greece

PS. the '8' is the owls eyes;)

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, the coin is definitely bronze or something like that, not silver.

There are plenty of these bronze coins from Attica in 'your coin's' size and weight.  I've been only able to find poor quality examples but perhaps someone else can provide a good link of one in great shape for you to compare?
