Identifying portrait - maybe Augustus
« on: February 23, 2015, 03:31:44 am »
Hello,
Wondering if anyone can identify the obverse portrait of this coin. I think it may be Augusts.
I have attached reverse but it is so worn I have no expectation anyone will be able to I/D this.
Coin looks like copper, 26 mm and 8.9 grams.
Many thanks

The portrait seems to have a beard.  Perhaps Hadrian or Antoninus Pius.  Same coins are just so far gone that nothing can ever be certain.

Hi folks,

When I first looked at the photos, I thought it looked like Hadrian too.

I like your take on it being AugustusHadrian and Antoninus Pius usually seem to have larger heads.  The seemingly good posture does give Hadrian a good 2nd on my list....and I'll throw-in possibly Germanicus as a distant 3rd choice;)

Thank you all for your input.
I have looked at coin with magnification and can not make out a beard - I think they are corrosion marks but I could be wrong as still learning. Agree with Mathew - Hadrian does have a bigger head from the coins I have seen so would lean towards Augustus which was my first reaction, but if I was sure I would not be asking.
I think coin may be as stated too worn to be sure but interested in any other opinions if anyone has one.
