Domitian denarius Minerva 2 without owl
« on: February 18, 2015, 01:37:32 pm »
Hi!

I realized that the owl is missing on this denarius  of Domitian. Should not owl sit at Minerva's feet next to the prow?  Is it usual deviation from the standard type of Minerva 2?

TR P XV COS XVII IMP XXII - RIC I 191; C 293 (3,07g - 18mm - 180')

Thanks,

Z.

I've seen hundreds of these, never noticed before a missing owl!

Is RIC 788 (C2) by the way.

That is quite the oddity! I too have never seen one without the owl. Perhaps the engraver was in a hurry and forgot it?

Poor him... if it was the engraver's mistake...most probably he ended up fighting with the lion in Colosseum
