Seleukid serrated AE, 14.5 mm confirmation?
« on: February 02, 2015, 05:41:19 pm »
I waxed and flipped a bunch of my uncleaned coins today, which means time to start ID'ing.  I decided to start somewhere mildly obvious?

Seleukid, serrated, AE, 14.5mm at widest. I suspect the die axis is 0 degrees?  I see right facing bust, slightly off flan on the obverse.  The reverse is a bit less clear, but I'm tempted to go with what seems to be relatively common, a goddess standing draped, holding a scepter or torch.  I'm leaning Antiochus IV, for the obverse bust and who it's minted under, but Seleukid coins are not my main area of study, so a confirmation would be appreciated?

Thanks, everyone.

Yes, Antiochos IV.  Good work!

Yay!  I really like this little guy, feels good in hand, and has enough detail to be interesting to look at, so I'm happy with a solid ID.   :)

It is listed on the wiki page. It is SC (Houghton, Lorber & Hoover's Seleucid Coinage) number 1479. Struck circa 173/172 - 168 BC though possibly continuing later given how common a type it is. Series 2 from the mint of Ake, known as Antioch in Ptolemais at the time, now known as Acre, Israel.

The Goddess on the reverse is likely Demeter.

Yours is quite nice well-centred example for the type.

Thanks for the confirmation, everyone!  I really appreciate it.

Makes me super excited to figure out an ID on my second Seleucid... I'm still getting dirt layers off though.  Patience is such a difficult virtue!
