Title: New book: THE HANDUSI COINAGE OF AL-ANDALUS (David Francés Vañó)
Post by: OMNI on November 07, 2012, 08:11:08 am
Dear friends and colleagues,

Next December 1st, 2012, a new book by David Francés Vañó, edited by OMNI, will be presented in Valencia (Spain).

THE HANDUSI COINAGE OF AL-ANDALUS

This is the first catalogue specialized in Hispanic-Arabic fractions. No other similar work about these small and wonderful pieces has ever been published.

“The Handusi coinage of Al-Andalus” is conceived as an answer to the author’s need and conviction to rescue from oblivion these small pieces, traditionally known as “taifa fractions”, in order to dignify them and to elevate them to the category of proper coins.

Their little charm for collectors, the scarce bibliography and the difficulty to read their legends correctly have caused traditional difficulties when trying to place them into the convulsed and stormy 11th century AD in Al-Andalus.

Feeling that a new and deeper revision of this coinage was a need, in this work David Francés includes new types and places the known ones in their exact geographical context. Besides, following his observations, he explains the minting techniques of these Handusian dirhams, which were firstly conceived for low value transactions.
Other important details regarding their currency in terms of monetary system and weight are also explained.

This book bears light on many dark zones where these taifa fractions had been traditionally secluded. Its conclusions can be of both researcher’s and collector’s
interest, as it has also been conceived as a practical catalogue, which may be useful to classify pieces belonging to both public and private collections.
