Hi at all;
I have wrote a book on-line about methods to authentificate denarius or others silver ancient coins "¿Es falso mi denario? Guía para la autentificación de las monedas de plata de la Antigüedad" . This book that have got 20 chapters and It´s writing in Spanish, but contains more of 500 pictures that can be exploited even by those don´t know Spanish.
It´s completely free and you can find in the web:
www.tesorillo.com (http://www.tesorillo.com)
an excellent web (Forum Award for Numismatic Excellence 2008) of my good friend Manuel Pina.
The direct link to my work is:
http://www.tesorillo.com/fakes/index.htm (http://www.tesorillo.com/fakes/index.htm)
and I expect that will be a new resource for us against the scourge of counterfeiting.
I hope that you enjoy!!
Regards,
Carlos

This is superb, so good you could charge for it! Congratulations. I urge everyone to download a copy.

Impressive.

This is indeed impressive and very easy to understand. Numiswiki worthy.
Thank you for posting this!
-
Any chance of an English edition?
-
Love that smiling Nero on the cover
-
I agree with all the other posters.
A super, impressive effort which must have consumed much time to produce.
That this is made available for free is truly admirable!
I also would love to see an English version. Any chance of this happening.?
I for one would be willing to pay for it.
Thank you Carlos

I just tried this. Go to this website:
babelfish.yahoo.com/translate
put the website address into the area below where it says:
"Translate a web page"
Select "Spanish to English"
and you will get a reasonable translation :)
Happy New Year to All!
Many thanks to Carlos for this extremely helpful guide!

Excellent work Carlos, thank you to share it.
A hug

There are many wonderful pictures. The Google Chrome translator can be a bit humorous at times.

Hi;
Thanks you all for your kind words! I´m very happy and very pleased if you like my work.
I hope that it will be useful for us. Counterfeits are a problem; the same problem is USA that in Spain, and all need be united to fight against them.
Like Andrew, I invite you to download a copy and take advantage of my work. And jaimelai, pitbull... I´d like doing the English version but I will need a lot of help (as is evident!! ;))
Best Regards and a Happy New Year.
Carlos
PS: Minos; thanks to Photoshop Nero finally smiles! ;)

Also helps to get some training in understanding Spanish :)

Great work! We'll have to nominate it for a Forvm Award next year!
Lloyd - thanks for the link - you'd think that after being married to a Costa Rican for over 30 years that I would have picked up a word or two of Spanish!
-
I think, as a community, we should discuss how we could arrange for a collaborative translation - properly done so to speak so we can provide Carlos with a translated text that he can format with his pictures into an English language version of the pdf.
It would be the least we could do in thanks for the creation of this work.
-
Once again I would like to thank Carlos for his fine work.
I would also like to thank Lloyd for his tip which works like a dream and makes life much easier.
I also second byzcoll's sentiment.
One should learn some Spanish.
When I go to Europe and see all the bilingual people as well as those who respond here I both embarrassed and ashamed.
The little Spanish I learned in K-12 is pretty useless, maybe 5 year old level and my 2 terms of German as an undergraduate equally unhelpful.
Various efforts over the years have always fizzled out.
Sad fact--you need to learn a second language as a child and there must be some exposure/immersion
While Andrew's suggestion is noble I don't know how practical it is--it is hard to translate if you don't know the language
You are likely to end up with a version worse than the computer version.
We need enough people who are bilingual to help if this is to happen.

The photography is stunning.

It would be great if we could help witht he translation - In Lloyd's link, Google asks for a better translation if you run the mouse over the text. I was wondering, if you were to type in something would it appear changed for everyone or just the individual? The translation on "Denario" to "Penny" is getting to me. :)
-
It doesn't change for anyone. It is a suggestion to maybe somehow someday change their translation algorithms in a tiny way.
-
Thanks again to all!
Like areich says, on-line translaters are too bad and I think that only are useful to get a rough idea of the text.
Andrew McCabe has offered to oversee a traslation of the Guide, and other partner agree to initate the traslation. I hope that we can get an English version in the near future!
I will be happy if you all can read my work in your own language.
Regards,
Carlos

Just noticed that tesorillo just added auto-translate buttons for French and English for this wonderful site. I'm playing around with their GCA rating system for a prospect. Still uses Google which still translates "denario" to "penny" though. :)
-
It's a traditional translation which was OK when the first English Bibles came out, and the penny was a high-value silver coin. I despair at the comparison with a modern penny, though!
-
A beginner to ancients, your guide and wealth of photos has really helped me understand both the minting process of Roman coins and the methods used by forgers. Thank you for sharing this for free--I have told fellow collectors about your e-book. :) :)

And you can thank Joe Semarini who pays for this site out of his own pocket.

What a wonderfully illustrated guide! Can't wait for the translation that's in the works, which I too would happily pay for btw.

Wow, thank you so much! I'm new to collecting and this is by far the best tool for spotting fakes, this is an invaluable guide. Thanks again, Ron

Bien hecho Carlos,
-
I wish this was in English. . It looks very impressive
-
Very - helpful. Many thanks!
-
Thanks Carlos for providing your excellent book for free - and to all contributors who share their collective knowledge and experience on this Forum.
-
This is an amazing guide! Thank you.
-
I have read all of what was written and it will become one of my major learning resources for the identification of fake denarii.
Thankyou.

Excellent Source, Thanks so much ,
