Title: Photoshoping service today!
Post by: Jay GT4 on September 01, 2011, 01:15:28 pm
I have some free time so if anyone wants background removed or photos touched up I will do it as I have a bit of tme.  It's best if the photo is in focus and not too small.  I won't manipulate it too much, only touch up color and perhaps sharpen the image but I won't "re-shape" it!  ;D  Most photos I see in the galleries have a red tinge to them.  I won't get into the technical reason for this imbalance but I can help correct it.

Here's one I did for my friend Benito.  I only removed the background and then did an "automatic" image adjustment:

One more of Bento's.  This one looked "washed out"  I adjusted color and contrast:

I know this maybe a lot to ask but if and when you have the time, why not share some tips with us?
I can do some things but I know there is much more that is possible. One thing I don't know is how to remove the background with silver coins, without leaving the edges all ragged. For my gallery I don't need it but it is still useful for some things.
If you want, you can use this one:

Here's one I found in Lucas' gallery.  Took away the red tinge and bumped up the contrast a bit.  Also used the sharpening tool as it was slightly out of focus.

areich is it toned or more silver?  I can remove the red but I want to know how toned it is.

It is as darkly toned as the picture shows. In hand there's just a hardly noticable trace of burgundy, much weaker than in the picture.

Does it look like this in hand?

A nice big hi res picture works best.

I use Photoshop 6, it's an older version and not as user friendly as the newer versions but this one is the one I taught myself on.

I first zoom in close around the rim of the coin 200%.  I then select the "background removal tool".  I don't use the "select color tool" as I prefer to manually go in up close.  This gives me more control of what gets removed.

I select black as the background rather than the "transparent" and I begin moving the circle "paint brush" all around the coin. I zoom in so I can see the very edge of the coin.  I then "paint" the background black.  I ever so slightly overlap onto the coin so as to give a nice crisp edge.  This can be difficult if it is a low res picture because the pixels will be huge when you zoom in.  A high res picture has smaller pixels.

I then finish removing the background with the circular paint tool.  I can make the diameter as big or small as need be to get into every nook and cranny of the coins edge.  I can also use a "block" tool to do large areas.

Once the background is black (or white or whatever color you choose) I then use the "adjust image" tab.  There is a selection for "Auto Adjust image"  I click that as it is usually smart enough to correct color and contrast on it's own.  If not I click the "Adjust color" tab and back off the red until the image looks like the coin in hand.  I do the same for the other colors.

Then I move on to the "Adjust Contrast and Brightness" tab.  Again I play with the values until it looks like the coin in hand.  Usually this is minimal as over compensating with contrast and brightness makes the coin look bad.

If the photo is out of focus there is a "Sharpen" Filter which sharpens the edges.  Again there is a way to crank this up more or less.  A lower "sharpening" works best.

That's really it.  Very simple but you need a steady hand.  The "Step" backward tool is great for when you mess up!

Jay, sounds like we do pretty much the same thing. I use a pen pad when doing mine. I use to use a laptop touch pad, and hated doing photos, then my wife said "why don't you use my pen pad" or whatever the thing is called. Made a world of difference. I have been getting better as I go along.

You do things in a slightly different order than me though. I also haven't tried the sharpen image or auto adjust. I have some coins that I did with only the touchpad of a laptop and had been trying to figure out my new camera setup in my new house so tried a red backing when taking the photo, and well they look like garbage. They are pretty apparent when looking at my gallery. I just can't find the desire to use what little spare time I have taking new pics of coins already posted.

I will have to see if the few other things you do help me out.

Thanks a lot. In hand there's even less red, just barely noticeable but the picture is fine as it is. I wish it was as red as my original picture looks on my monitor, so I didn't fiddle with it much at the time. For now I needed a white background but this was now very easy to change. Thanks for the detailed instructions.

The Augustus was tough, either too bright or too dark.  Tried to find a compromise:

Thanks again  ;D

I have my own coins to do but it's more fun doing new ones!  It just goes to show how coins can be manipulated to look quite different.  If you can give me details as to the tone and color of coins in hand I can do my best to make it true.

Thank you very much Jay,

It looks quite better now. The main problem is that the fileds on the obverse are out of focus,
that because of the relief.

A new, better shot is needed here.

Best regards,

rover

Haha, I know why. I had the same issue and now know you are too. For some reason the photo in PhotoShop was not in the rgb colors but ckt I think it is, and it messes up the color when posted. I thought I had fixed it, because that is how I got it to look decent enough to post. Guess not...

Helen, try this:

Go to the Gallery.
Enter admin mode - you will get a page with a "Create/Reorder albums button, next page, hit NEW button, NEW will appear in the box, below enter the name of the album that you wish to create, hit enter. Go to My Collection page, hit "Modify Album" button, Enter Album description, Enter. Then you can hit "add a coin", select your album from the list that appears, and you are on your way!

Here is an easier way I found

"When in the gallery, tick "create/order my albums". You see a white board where you can add "new" albums by naming them and order them as you want with the arrows. You've succeeded the first step

Then tick "add a coin" in the bar at the top of your screen. Well, actually you can add up to five at the same time. The "browse" button on the right leads you to the search function on your computer, where you can select the pic you want to add. When it's finished, tick "continue" and follw instructions. At some point it will ask you in which of the albums created above you want to put your image and any comment or explanation or references you would like to add to your image.

You've now gotten a magnificent gallery, congrats

Best

Nice!

Here is the link to your coin:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-92105

You can find your gallery by clicking on the Gallery tab up top, then once there click on the tab that says "My coins".  Viola!
To add more coins go to the gallery and click "add a coin" and follow the steps.

You can move them to different galleries once they are up.  No problem.

All you have to do is crop and combine, no magic required.

I agree, areich, it's not magic.

However, there are a few reasons for my asking Jay:

* Sometimes when I work with pictures - almost always when I am working with my own lower grade photos - the files are too big and I am not sure what size they are supposed to be. I think Jay is better at solving this problem

* Then there is the background - I don't know how to add background

* Finally, with some training you're better at adding the right amount of lighting or sharpness to the image

Not sure if these are valid reasons, but there it is...

Right now I just want the pictures up there.

Thank you all.

Either black or  white background.

Do you use photoshop, Jay. I would like to learn how to change the background.

Thanks in advance,

Patrik
Title: Re: Photoshoping service today!
Post by: areich on June 09, 2013, 06:11:04 pm
It is helpful to use a simple background that isn't so textured. Many people use a glass plate over a white plastic or porcelain container. This gets rid of the shadow.

Here's an example.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=74638.0

Then use an image editing program with, e.g. the 'bucket' tool to fill in the background. There's usually a tolerance setting, you want to fill in all of the background but not the coin. Often, with high-volume sellers, you'll see silver coins where part of the edge is missing from the picture. This is because the contrast between coin and background wasn't high enough or the image editing too sloppily done.
There are other tools but I think the principle is the same for all of them.

There are some other interesting threads and Doug's site is a great resource as well.

Yeah. the dpi is low unfortunately, when I try to upload full resolution, it tells me image is too big. Never mind, I'll figure it out.

I took some new photos and did the background thingy as well. I am not really that good with the paintbrush yet.. but I think I did pretty good:

Title: Re: Photoshoping service today!

Ok, thanks. I've done that sometimes and all the time I was wondering if there was a simpler way of doing it when the paint bucket and similar tools don't work.

Hi Jay GT4  I was playing with Photoshop and to be honest it is not easy  ???  I was wondering if you can make a short video or tutorial on how to change the background on a coin  .Thank you  +++  your coin photos in your galerie are amazing
Title: Re: Photoshoping service today!
Post by: Jay GT4 on December 28, 2013, 09:00:48 pm
Thanks!  Yes the CS5 is a more professional software.  I'll assume you already know how to crop and paste the obverse and reverse together.  I like my image to be around 600x1200.  Once you have both images together this is how I do it.  There are other ways but this way gives me the most control.

Open your image
On the left hand side select the eraser tool (it looks like an eraser).
Right click that box and a menu will open.  Select the first one "Eraser tool"
At the bottom of that left hand menu there is another box with two squares in it.  One is black one white.  This is what the foreground or background will be, either black or white.  You can also choose any color of your choice, I stick with black.
Move your pointer onto your image and a circle will appear.
By right clicking on your image you can make that circle bigger or smaller and you can change the hardness.  I leave the hardness at 100%
Start erasing by left clicking or by holding down the left button and moving the mouse.

I usually zoom in nice and big to get each individual background pixel out.  If you make a mistake simply click the "Edit" tab on top and then "step backwards"

When the entire background is black I then click on the top menu tab "Image" then Auto Tone, Auto Color and Auto Contrast.  That is usually good enough.  If not you can manually adjust under the same tab "Image".

If you need to sharpen an image because it is slightly blurry use the tab "Filters" on the top, then "Sharpen".  Be careful this can make a coin surface look very rough!

That's really all I do for most coins.  Play around with the different effects.  Youtube has wonderful tutorials for really cool photographic manipulation.

Enjoy!
