2 new ancients have been added to my gallery.

First is after a year of hunting for the perfect example that met the top 3 things I looked for, I finally got a Horned Bust of Elagabalus, which for me is a big deal.

I understand so well how much it is of a favorite, being myself an absolute fan of Plautilla (see here for more : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=1003&page=1&sort=ta )

BTW Hilaritas is on the scarcer side as a reverse type : I have made a survey about Plautilla denarii and out of almost 500 of them only 58 had been minted in Laodicaea, 10 of them with a Hilaritas reverse. Very nice addition.

Although I can see the economics behind the slabbing (and the potential results : see a parallel with the rating agencies !!!!!! i.e thousands of subprimes rated AAA in 07), it is an obscenity to me as far as antique coins are concerned. So good work for getting rid of this .........

A nice coin!

The bust type is not unusual, however. Probably just not in RIC because Cohen 903 wrongly includes it under "draped, cuirassed", and the RIC authors didn't bother to check the BM collection.

BM 286-288 has three specimens like yours. A hoard we had several years ago contained 16 denarii with this rev. type, five of them with the same draped bust as your coin.

BMC, up to 238 AD, is much more reliable for such details than the first editions of RIC for the period! Seaby's Roman Silver Coins is also excellent, and of course takes account of BMC; your coin is RSC 903a.

Interesting and not common coin. Cohen 99 ( 30 francs). RIC 792 ( rare). Only two in Reka Devnia hoard.
I have a variant with the dot between  PV and BLI.

Yes. I did notice your dot ( over the B). 53 in Reka Devnia without dot. Only 10 francs in Cohen without dot.In RIC only S without dot.

The rare coin, Cohen 99, 30 francs, only two spec. in RD hoard, actually has VOTA PVBLICA as circular legend outside the wreath, and, Cohen mentions, also a centering point within the wreath.

Mat's coin is Cohen 98, 10 francs, 53 spec. in the hoard, i.e. fairly common, with VOTA / PVBLI / CA written in three lines within the wreath. Here Cohen doesn't mention the centering dot, but it is often present. Its positioning relative to the legend doesn't affect the attribution or the value of the coin.

I have wanted a Alexander III Herk/Zeus drachm for awhile and after trying to ID it myself for awhile I gave up and asked for help.

Now it has been added to my gallery with proper info.

Thanks again Rover!

First one is of Crispina which is for my AR set I am building of her and Lucilla.

Second is a Trajan Decius Ant. that I wanted cause I loved the portrait.

A new addition to my collection, a lifetime issue of Valerian II.

What makes this unique is it's reverse, it features the goddess Spes, by herself. Most example have spes with the young price reverse but this is only Spes.

This is the very first example here on the Forvm gallery, none are on wildwinds or ACsearch. So there is a level of rareity for this particular piece.

It cost me two roman tetradrachms in a trade but I am happy to have it.

As usual though its of low silver content.

Without knowing what "super cheap" means I'd say these are both great coins. The Petillia has all the details of the temple including the various ornaments, and all the lettering on both sides, and if you paid a price that reflects its poor surfaces you got a good deal. The Titia has beautiful surfaces and great silver, the wear is nice and even and Pegasus is all there. Well done!

Elagabalus had good taste in women.

Anyways I woke up to find an update to my iphone program I use to take pics, it fixed a bug that caused the blue tint.

So I have taken a new photo of the coin and the blue is gone!

Woohoo!

A nice coin, congrats!

Grueber stated this was the very first coinage happened in Gallia, though Sydenham disputes it advising there could have been earlier issues in Narbo. In any case between these and the following coinage in Gallia by Caesar there was a waiting period of over 30 years.
The coinage is related to Caius Valerius Flaccus' successes in Hispania and Gallia that got him an imperium and eventually a triumph in Rome.
Crawford relates it to the first movements against Sertorius in Hispania.

I wrote a few years ago a small blog post about this very intersting issue: http://numismaticantigua.blogspot.co.uk/2011/08/republica-romana-valeria-rrc-3651a.html
You non-Spanish speakers might want to use the infamous Google translator or another such concoction.....

Fantastic coin Mat (as I mentioned on CT)! The portrait style between 84-88/89 was the best of the reign, IMHO. Progressively it got more baroque as the reign continued.

Your coin is new RIC 507 (C).
