Title: My Collection of Republican Denarii
Post by: Bud Stewart on January 17, 2011, 05:04:14 pm
I just added the following denarius to my small collection:

L. Procilius L.f. - Procilia-2

ROMAN REPUBLIC L. Procilius L.f. Silver denarius serratus, VF, Italian mint, (4.109gm, maximum diameter 19.4mm, die axis 180o) 80 B.C.
Head of Juno Sospita clad in goat skin right, S C (senatus consulto - authorized by special decree of the Senate) behind
Juno Sospita in a biga right, brandishing spear and holding shield, snake below, L.PROCILI.F in exergue
SRCV 307, Sydenham 772, Crawford 379/2, RSC I Procilia 2

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-63898

This is my first, but definitely not my last FORVM purchase.  I've often heard that Joe's coins are better in person, and I now I can happily attest to that.

Thanks Joe.

Thanks very much for your kind words Rover.

I'm very impressed by your Greek Silver Gallery.  I am really enjoying watching your put together what is shaping up to be a truly important collection.  Although I don't have enough knowledge on the subject to make comment, I always make sure to follow your threads.  I find them educational and entertaining.  Isn't that why were here?  ;D

Although I don't have enough knowledge on the subject to make comment...

Well, i feel exactly the same.
I know almost nothing on Roman coins, so i can't comment!  :)
But quality can't hide, although i am not experienced on Romans, i can clearly see your try to keep the quality high.
Keep up this, it works!

nice addition Bud!

i would probably collect Repulican silver if i wasn't into Greek, and i've been wanting a serratus for some time. i hope it's as nice as this one.   8)
good luck with your RR collection.

Thanks Peter,

Your M. Sergius Silus is fantastic, if it's not improper to describe such a "gruesome depiction" as fantastic.  I have never seen a clear face on the severed head before.  This coin is on my "want list", but I doubt I'll be able to acquire one with the same quality that your specimen displays.

I think I've caught the 'Republican Bug'.  I am still having fun learning about and collecting Imperial, but the Republic Denarii are really intriguing.

I just added my most recent acquisition to my Gallery.

Aemilius Lepidus Paullus. 62 BC. AR Denarius Rome mint
Diademed and veiled head of Concordia right
L. Aemilius Paullus standing to right of trophy, Perseus and his two sons captive on the left.
Crawford 415/1; Sydenham 926; Aemilia 10. RSC 366

Unfortunately, I was forced to use the dealer's photograph.  I attempted, but my skills & equipment just wouldn't do this coin "justice"

Potator, what a great compliment from such an advanced Numismatist.  I just had the pleasure of viewing your Republican/Imperator Gallery.  I ran out of superlatives.  All I can say is; thanks for sharing this wonderful collection with us.

I have just replaced the "dealer photo" of my Aemilius Lepidus Paullus with my own work.  I dare say, I rather like my picture better.  I have taken this under 'natural light' and it has a much 'livelier' feel.  I thought that the old photo was flat & lifeless, much like that you find in very old auction catalogs.  See if you agree.

I just had the pleasure of adding the following denarius to my collection:

L Rutilius Flaccus - Rutilia-1

ROMAN REPUBLIC. 77 BC. Silver Denarius
Helmeted head of Roma right, FLAC behind
Victory in biga right, L RVTILLI in ex.
Crawford 387/1, Sydenham 780, Rutilia-1, RCV 318

Certainly not COTD material, but it came inexpensive and I think that it has “character”.

The second, and best of the, two Republican Denarii that I just added to my slowly growing collection.  I've said it before (forgive me for repeating), I love sharing my small collection with my FORVM Mates.  Thanks for indulging me.

Thanks KC,

The biggest adjustment that I had to make when I entered this fascinating world is that “Imperfect” is okay.   Although my goal is quality, and I will always opt for the best coin available, I’ve learned that very few coins, and virtually none that fall in my budget, are perfectly struck on a perfectly round flan.  I’ve come to appreciate what is there and not be preoccupied with what is not.  About condition; I know that the coins that I love are 2,000-years old and have lived interesting lives, often wearing the ‘battle scars’ that they have earned.

With full knowledge that this is not a Republican Issue, I have placed it in my “Republican Gallery” for ‘safe keeping’ until I move it:

Marc Antony 32-31 BC. AR Legionary Denarius (3.33 gm).
Praetorian galley right

Thanks Peter, Noah, ‘dafnis’,

I’m really enjoying putting my collection together and it is great to get feedback form some really advanced collectors such as you.  Thanks for the encouragement.

I almost doubled my Republican Collection at the Whitman Show in Baltimore.  I was fortunate to be able to sell some Modern United States Commemorative Coins at one end of the bourse floor and use the proceeds to pick up some nice specimens.

One of the denarii I aquired, perhaps my favorite, was from our mate Barry Murphy

L Scribonius Libo Denarius (3.88 gm). 62 BC.
BON EVENT LIBO, Head of Bonus Eventus right, with broad diadem
PVTEAL SCRIBON Well-head ornamented with two lyres, hammer.

Title: Re: My Collection of Republican Denarii

Do you know what the meaning of the hammer is?

Apparently a link with Vulcan, in that these coins show hammer (usually) tongs (less often) and anvil (very rarely), being the symbols of Vulcan, the blacksmith god, and also the god of lightning from the sparks in a blacksmiths furnace.

The wellhead is in turn linked to Vulcan because it was founded at a spot struck by lightning.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puteal_Scribonianum
The Scribonian Puteal was a bidental — that is, a spot which had been struck by lightning. It took its name from its resemblance to the stone curb or low enclosure around a well (puteus) that was between the Temple of Castor and Pollux and the Temple of Vesta, near the Porticus Julia and the Arcus Fabiorum (arch of the Fabii).

I have one of the very rare types with anvil (pic below). I bought it recently - it cost just the "normal" price for the common hammer type, not being well known as a rarity. Good.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ahala_rome/5282053479/lightbox/

A pic of Vulcan below with "your" hammer and "my" anvil shown.

I found out all this information in the last 10 minutes by the way - an example of the many small joys of coin collecting in that if you had not asked the question, I would not have gone searching for information about Vulcan.

a lovely coin Bud.
the dog, not just present but animated, brings a soulfulness to this coin which might otherwise be nonexistant. i would have had a hard time resisting this one too, as i am a complete sucker for canine friends.
the passage in the Odyssey where Odysseus returns home in disguise but is immediately recognized by his dog Argos, who promptly dies satisfied knowing his master has returned, brings me to tears every time i read it (i will add that Republican type to my collection too... some day).

a nice 'alive' addition to your collection.

Your RR collection is of uniformly high quality and the imagery is fantastic, which makes leaving your RR page open in my browser quite an enjoyable experience!

I have a new favorite coin that I feel a need to share with my FORUM mates.  I was very happy when this one came on the market.  I’ve had a Sergia-1 on my “wish list” since I started my collection on Republican Denarii.

I haven’t been as active here on The FORVM or with my collection as I would like, but I’ve added a few specimens to my collection of Denarii.  Here is the latest:

Just added another Republican denarius.

I love these issues of the dying days of the Republic.  If only coins like this could speak. Oh, what ‘tales they could tell’.

With full knowledge that this is not a Republican Issue, I have placed it in my “Republican Gallery” for ‘safe keeping’ until I move it:

Marc Antony 32-31 BC. AR Legionary Denarius (3.33 gm).
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-65855

? Why is it not a Republican issue. It's an issue of Mark Antony, who, per his title was a Triumvir Reipublicate Constituendae - One of three Men for the Regulation of the Republic. You can't get more Republican than that!

The Roman Republic ended on Monday 16th January 27BC when Octavian renounced his Roman Republican proconsular and triumviral powers (which were given by the Senate), and the Senate instead gave him the titles of Princeps and Augustus, and appointed him to a ten year responsibility for many of the provinces. It was evident from that point onwards that there was no intention of anyone to revert to the Republican constitution. Prior to 16/1/-27, anything was possible - Octavian might have not accepted the Princeps/Augustus roles nor the imperial provinces and instead, as Sulla had done, established a plan to put the Senate and People back in the driving seat.

Thanks Andrew,

You are correct; this was a bit of intellectual laziness on my part.  What I was attempting to convey was that, until I acquire enough specimens to start an “Imperatorial sub-gallery”, I intend to place my “legionary denarius” with the rest of my Republican denarii.

As you’ve correctly pointed out; I did state “with full knowledge that this is not a Republican Issue”.  My statement is very ignorant of the facts.  I knew better then, and I surely know better now.  I hope my sloppiness was not an irritation to my FORVM Mates.

Once again Andrew, thank you.  +++

Bud

It's a nice coin Republican or not! I've been looking for clear specimens for two decades or more annd they are tough to find with such a clear reverse number. But on your point I'm not sure Imperatorial coins really are a separate group. These were the coins of the Roman Republic in the 40s and 30s BC; some were struck in the name of proconsuls or triumvirs, and some, of the same time period, were not.

Thanks very much Peter.  I’m really enjoying collecting and learning.

I find the historical narratives in your gallery very enlightening, as well as entertaining.  You gallery descriptions are an inspirational reminder of why I collect coins.  It may sound trite, but coins really are “history in the Hand”.

Some of the most prized additions to my ‘collection’ will probably never be posted in my “Gallery”; these are the additions I’ve made to my library.  I have had the pleasure of reading some great books this year.  Most of my reading has been about the eras I’ve been collecting and this has really given context to the coins in my cabinet.

Once again Peter, I must thank you for your kind words of support.

I hope you have a Wonderful New Year.

Well, I’ve just made my first acquisition of 2013.

It may not be spectacular, but I’m very happy with my new denarius.

I must to admit to have a special affinity to the coinage of the dying decades of the Republic.  My Acilia-8 was minted in the  “Year of the Consulship of Lentulus and Marcellus”, which is year that Caesar crossed the Rubicon.  While there were many events that lead to this fateful event, this was ‘arguably’ the beginning of the end to The Roman Republic.

Thank Andrew.  I'm aware that Sextus Pompeius Fostlus is from the same Gens that produced the famous Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus (“Pompey the Great”), but what, if any, is the familial relationship?

The person is unknown as is the date and motive of issue hence any relation to Gn.Pompeius Magnus would be speculative. However due to the extraordinary type and its position in Republican numismatics as the first extraordinary type and its date in the 130s BC there's been centuries of discussion. See for example Crawford's view that it's an advertisement for the anti Numantia treaty factions. There's no consistent view. In fact in Coins in Roman Imperial Policy, Metcalf in a long essay, Coins as Primary Evidence, explains how little we are actually sure about this type. It might, he says, even be a Pomponia rather than a Pompeia. This hasn't stopped curious minds discussing the coin.

Thanks Peter,

What really gets me excited about our wonderful pastime is the direct connection to some of the most fascinating people and events in history.  Without the ‘back-story’ my cabinet just becomes a hoard of pretty, and not so pretty, pieces of stamped metal.

Always with my love of history & biography at ‘centre stage’, I started collecting modern circulating commemoratives.  I very rapidly moved onto, what I call, Early Modern European Silver with an emphasis of the coinage of the 30-Year-War.

I ‘discovered’ Roman Denarii when I stumbled upon a Trajan and a Septimius Severus at a local Coin Store.  I was surprised that I could afford these pieces and, and more out of curiosity than anything, I purchased my first two denarii.

My second great ‘discovery’ occurred when my attempt to use the internet to find out about my newly acquired denarii led me to the FORVM.  As a newbie, I was initially very intimidated to participate, but the welcoming reception I received from members of the FORVM quickly dispelled my apprehension and I felt right at home.

When I was invited to share my collection in the Galleries, I at first hesitated.  As my pictures attest, I’m no photographer, but I now love to share my collection with people who share my enthusiasm.

Other ‘life activities’ seem to preclude me from being a more active FORVM participant, but as I keep saying, I need to change that and one day I will.

Thanks to all my FORVM Mates.
