Hi!
The 2nd edition of Hristova/Jekov's Marcianopolis is on the way. But the flow of new coins doesn't stop. So to avoid confusions I open a new thread for the newly found coins. The HrJ-numbers are referring to the 1st edition!

HrJ No. 6.27.10.1 is not Elagabal & Julia Soaemias but actually Elagabal & Julia Maesa. The depicted coin is so worn that the legend is not readable. But the lady wears a stephane and Soaemias is only known without.

Dear Jochen, Before this list gets any longer, may I ask a question that has been bothering me in the other lists?
Here, as in "ex NumismatikLanz", it seems to mean as in ex Handel, as distinct from im Handel; so also, for ex., ex Burstein means formerly in the Burstein, Nevada collection.
On the other hand, I have assumed that "ex Hoeft" means in your own collection, as your bookplate says "ex libris", or "one of the collection of".
Either meaning is permissible in Latin, of course. In catalogues of coins, however, the first meaning, formerly is usual. If you write, however, once John Quincy Adams (our coin collecting president), it means that the specimen is known to have been one of his, but its present location may not be known, unless your write, e.g., Name of Museum, once JQA, whereas when we see in a list "ex BCD", we mean that the coin is in one of the catalogues of his collection, and "ex Lindgren" means either in one of his three volumes or in one of the Lindgren lists that disposed of those that were not.
I noticed Patchev, whom I know as the distributor of Marcianopolis I, with "ex" preceding his name. I never heard of a Bulgarian academic who was also a dealer.
Pat L.

Dear Pat!
You are right. I have used the term 'ex' in two different ways. If I have written 'ex coll. ABC' it should mean that this coin is 'in' the collection of ABC, at least in the moment I have posted it. If I have written 'ex ABC' without 'coll.' I mean that I have the pic from a seller, in whose possession the coin is - at least I hope so - who offers this coin on a platform.
Do you have a recommendation to differentiate between these two sources?
Best regards!

Jochen,
My suggestion:
A coin currently in a private collection should be cited as, for example:
"Coll. C. L. Clay, shown in Numismatikforum, Nov. 2010."
Coins offered online:
"Numismatik Lanz, eBay, 18 Nov. 2010" or
"Numismatik Lanz, VCoins, Nov. 2010" or
"Forvm Ancient Coins, RB48345, Dec. 2010."
A coin in a printed catalogue:
"Rauch 87.I, 8 Dec. 2010, 559."
As Pat says, "ex" should only be used to indicate FORMER owners, as for example
"Coll. C.L. Clay, ex Rauch 87.I, 8 Dec. 2010, 559, shown in FAC, Jan. 2011."
Season's greetings,
Curtis

Thanks Curtis!
I will consider your suggestions.

Of course your form of citation makes no difference whatever for Hristova and Jekov's proposed new editions of their mint monographs, if the authors continue to eliminate any reference to the source of the photos they use, as in their books so far!
But I consider this a bad mistake, and hope that Hristova and Jekov will actually correct it in future editions.

This is actually what I was thinking. It seems more important to me to have all the coins recorded in AMNG, Ruzicka's and Mushmov's works collated and properly assigned catalogue numbers (whether there is an example to illustrate or not) than to assign precise listings for coins that have come to light in the market.
I'm all for exactness, but the basic framework of these monographs needs to be shored up if they are to be used in a scientific manner. Otherwise they should just be viewed as collector handbooks, not of the same caliber as the aforementioned works. A thorough editing of all of them wouldn't hurt either. It seems one may find a mistake on every page of every volume if so inclined.

Unfortunately the nature of the books so far is, "a collection of available photographs of coins of a particular mint, primarily from online catalogues, sales, and databases, with the addition of a number of highly important private collections, all however unsourced, with descriptions of the legends and types and cross references to the excellent AMNG and the useless Mouchmov 1912."
How can one contemplate a corpus of the coins of a lower Danubian or Thracian city without access to the world's best collection of them, in Sofia's National Museum? Yet Hristova and Jekov have not had such access, through no fault of their own as I suppose. AMNG of course catalogues the complete Sofia collection as it was a century ago, but with almost no photographs, and Hristova and Jekov want only illustrated coins for their book, so have to leave Sofia out almost entirely. It's as though you wanted to write a catalogue of Anglo-Saxon coins but were denied access to the British Museum collection!
I also find it extremely regrettable that the authors have abandoned AMNG's clear and essentially chronological arrangement of the coinages, first by governors in chronological order, then by module from large to small, finally by reverse type in the conventional order, gods and goddesses-heroes and personifications-emperors-animals and objects-architectural, the small coins without governor's name coming at the end. Instead Hristova and Jekov arrange the coins of each emperor and empress primarily by reverse type, jumbling together all the different governors and the different modules. Good luck if you want to form some idea of the typological, stylistic, and denominational development of the coinage of a particular city during a particular reign!
Nonetheless, as mere collections of material, the books are highly useful, given the abysmally low quantity of illustrations in AMNG!

#40 (I think a new die combination, and the reverse, at least, a new die)
I saw that the coin offered was very attractive, but with all the combinations already known of Nemesis - Dikaiosyne (Aequitas), I did not expect a new one.
From the partially preserved letters I cannot be sure whether it is Pontianus or Agrippa, though the bottoms of the letters look like :Greek_Alpha: :Greek_Gamma: :Greek_Rho: rather than :Greek_Pi: :Greek_Omicron: :Greek_Nu:, but, on the obverse, the boy is certainly called Antoninus rather than Diadumenianos.
•• 24 06 11 AE 26 12,21g axis 7h Marcianopolis. Issued by (?) Agrippa. Macrinus, head to r. and Diadumenian, head to l. AVT K OPEL SEVÊ MAKR[---- ----]INOS Rev. Maesa.
If that is the same coin as HrJ (2006), p. 194, third coin, then I think you are correct.
That coin on p. 194 seems to be from the same dies as your nice specimen, and therefore is of Alexander and Mamaea, not Alex. and Maesa.
HrJ have taken their image from Blancon List 41, 2003, 491, where the coin is correctly described as being of Alex. and Mamaea!
One wonders on what basis HrJ rejected this correct attribution and misassigned the coin to Alex. and Maesa, without any indication that the attribution might be doubtful. Maybe just carelessness: they copied the picture from Blancon, without recording his correct attribution, then misattributed it themselves, unaware that they were contradicting Blancon!
The matter would have been easy to sort out, if HrJ had only paid attention to the dies: under Philopappus at Marcianopolis there was only one obv. die for Alex. and Mamaea, and one obv. die for Alex. and Maesa.
My photofile contains the Blancon coin, Jochen's example (dealer picture, Sept. 2010), and four others from the same pair of dies.

AE 17, 2.28g
obv. AVT KM AVR - ANTWNINOC (WN ligate)
laureate head r.
rev. MARKIANOPOLITWN
Telesphoros in hooded cloak stg. frontal
ref. a) AMNG I/1, 910
b) Varbanov (engl.) 1422
c) Hristova/Jekov (2011) No. 6.26.21.11 var. (has ANTWNINOC)
d) not in Pfeiffer
numidas, E-Bay, February 2012
A closer look at the lower coin of HrJ 66.26.21.11 shows, that it too has ANTWNINOC with the ligate WN. It deserves its own number.

A new variant and a correction
Septimius Severus, AD 193-211
AE 21, 5.38g, 240°
obv. AV KL CEP - CEVHROC
laureate head r.
rev. MARKIANOPO - LITWN (R very small and probably added later to correct a legend
error)
Tyche, wearing kalathos, stg. frontal, head l., holding cornucopiae in l. arm and in r. hand
rudder
ref. a) AMNG I/1, 588 var.
b) Varbanov (engl.) 739 var.
c) Hristova/Jekov (2011) No. 6.14.38.23 var.
d) Pfeiffer 58 corr. (writes CEVHROC - P)
coll. Pfeiffer, Nr. 58
(1) HrJ (2011) 6.14.38.23 has actually MAKIANOPO - LITWN without R. So it is a legend error. HrJ has in error written RK ligate. This should be corrected
(2) The attached coin from Pfeiffer has this rev. corrected by the die cutter by adding a small R to the rev. legend between A and K.
Thanks to Helcaraxe from the Austrian Forum, who has discovered this small but important difference.

A rev. legend correction
Severus Alexander & Julia Mamaea, AD 222-235
AE 25, 12.96g, 25.38mm, 0°
struck under Umbrius Tereventinus
obv. AVT KM AVR CEVH ALEZANDROC.IOVLIA MAMAIA
Confronting busts of Severus Alexander, r., and Julia Mamaea, l.
rev. HG OVM TEREBENTINO[V MARKIANOPOLITWN] (HG, 1st OV, AR and possibly WN
ligate)
Apollo Lykeios stg. frontal, head r., r. hand over head, in raised l. hand holding his bow; r.
a tree-stump entwined by a snake; on the l. side his quiver with open lid and arrows
in l. field E
ref. a) not in AMNG
b) Varbanov (engl.) 1821 (same dies)
c) Hristova/Jekov (2011) No. 6.34.7.2 corr. (same dies, but writes TEREBENTEINOV)
d) Pfeiffer 621 (same dies)
coll. Hoeft
The end of the rev. legend on all coins I have seen is illegible. So WN can be ligate or not ligate.

This was contribution #100 for the next edition of Hristova/Jekov Markianopolis (2012). I think this is worth a note!

#152, rev. legend:
Looks to me like AP also ligate (Varb. 1821), probably also WN ligate (Blancon List 41, 488), though one would like to be able to confirm with the coins actually in hand!
-
Hi Curtis!
I have looked at the coin depicted in Pfeiffer, #621, which is from same dies, and you are right: AR is ligate too!
Thanks

The pic of HrJ (2011) 6.19.6.5 and Varbanov #1066 show both clearly that the die cutter has written MARKIANPOLEITWN with ligate NP. After that a small o was added above NP. An interesting correction of a legend error.

Jochen, regarding this coin. I just now have time to go through your listed coins - concentrating on Gordians, of course. This coins is AMNG 1136. This coin is in my collection - I won the auction - and if one examines this coin reverse and compares with that of AMNG - especially since they have a plate image - it is an identical reverse die. The N has been removed from the coin or possibly from the die or the die was damaged.

Thanks for your addition. Yes, sometimes it is only possible to describe a coin correctly if you have it in hand.

So it is not a patera in her extended r. hand but grain ears. Nevertheless I think it is Hera, because the sceptre is the appropriate attribute for the queen of heaven, much better than for Demeter (the other option).

Correction for AMNG 541 / Hristova/Jekov (2014) No.6.10.38.1 -- actually Commodus / Tyche Euposia (on whom see Board topic 25089 (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=25089.315))
Having just acquired one of these, I'd like to point out the small faintly-drawn baby Ploutos in the crook of this Tyche's left arm; congratulations, Jochen -- I think you own two of them!

Coin Project (http://www.coinproject.com/siteimages/589/589-1000-2-071.jpg)
-
The child Ploutos is especially prominent on the die which was used for one specimen in Wildwinds (http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/commodus/_markianopolis_AE21_Moushmov_366.jpg)) as well as an ex-Lindgren specimen sold recently (which apparently = the coinproject-specimen above):
-
Hi archivum!
Thank you for your interesting post. I have actually overlooked it (and not only me!), but it is very difficult to recognize the baby. Not before you have pointed us to it!
Jochen
-
For these various specimens I count at least five reverse dies, some of these likely copied from others; the held infant gets fainter with copying, but never quite vanishes. Based on lettering, etc., the WW-Lindgren reverse seems distinct from Hr-J 6.10.38.1-4; lacking access to that reverse die made it easier to miss baby Ploutos here. Infant Ploutos is also visible though not noted on Pfeiffer, Markianopolis 5.
----
Just arrived, one more coin from the WW-Lindgren die; at just 20 mm / 5.9 g (diassarion-scale?), it's remarkable that this coin's depiction of Ploutos can hold up as well as it does.
[Edit: For comparison purposes -- see also the links in Reply #215 -- I'm attaching a rare Gordian III / Eirene with Ploutos from Hadrianopolis, Thrace, AE 27 9.47g, Varbanov 3781:]

To the coin of Gordian III from Hadrianopolis (reply #219 of Archivum):
A nice rev., showing the famous statue "Eirene and Ploutos" made by Kephisodotos (400-c.360 BC, father or uncle of Praxiteles).

Joining Tyche Euposias from this mint for both Commodus and Caracalla (Reply #215-18, with additional links), I suggest that this reverse die for Septimius Severus features Tyche Euposia as well; it is apparently not represented in Varbanov or in Hristova-Jekov, although Hr-J 6.14.38.11 does approximate this reverse legend but then pictures a non-matching coin. The same reverse die (infant Ploutos represented though not noted) was used with a Caracalla obverse for Pfeiffer, Markianopolis 92. As with Commodus' Tyche Euposia (Reply #218), it appears that the minuscule Ploutos was too hard to carve for some die-cutters. From Ken Dorney's recent auction, Septimius Severus, Markianopolis, AE 26, 9.74 g, Varbanov 809 (var.), laur. cuir. draped burst r., AY K L SEPTI SEYHROS P / Tyche Euposia stg. l. holding Ploutos and rudder, VI P'AYSTINIANOV MARKIANOPOLITWN (dealer's photo, circle added for Ploutos, and new photo, now that I have the coin):
-
archivum, you have good eyes!
Jochen
-
Thanks, Jochen! Maybe now other strikes from this die will resurface, and we will know more of this aspect of Tyche. I myself am surprised Ploutos doesn't appear with Concordia/Homonoia on Rome's coins or Roman provincials, but no sign of that, so far.
-
Wow! Very interesting discovery Archivum!
-
There's a version of Hr-J 6.14.8.4 and Varbanov 784 that has only AYSTINIA not AYSTINIANOY (I have one, but see Doug Smith's superior example:
-
Definitely not handsome, but this coin (AE29, 12.19g, mag. Quintilianus) is apparently a new variant on Hr-J 6.19.46.3-7 representing Serapis in a tetrastyle temple, this time with the value-mark E to the right of the temple:
-
On inspection I think there's a Ploutos on Tyche Euposia's arm in this Auspex example as well:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=50821.msg389643#msg389643
-
Well possible. You have sharp eyes.
Jochen
-
That's a pretty rare specimen you have; infant Ploutos is also visible though not noted on the different reverse die (also Auspex) of Pfeiffer, Markianopolis 13.
-
Jochen, I admire your tenacity in preparing addenda for the several Hristova & Jekov (and related) publications.
I've seen a couple of references to a second edition of H-J Marcianopolis (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/numiswiki/view.asp?key=H-J%20Marcianopolis) including a 2012 edition. Numiswiki does not currently appear to have details about different editions, citing only its 2014 publication. My edition is from 2007, which is likely the first edition.
The Markianopolis updates trailed off in 2017. Is there somewhere else I should be looking for updates? I saw one reference to "Coin Project," but that does not resonate with me.
Numiswiki makes reference to four books in the series. My only other H-J publication is Serdica.
1. H-J Serdica (2007)
2. H-H-J Nikopolis (2015)
3. H-J Marcianopolis (2014)
4. H-J Nicopolis ad Nestum (2007)
I welcome any clarity on the series that you care to share.
-
Dear Chris!
In their series "The Coins of Moesia inferior I-III c.A.C", Prof. Jekov and Prof. Hristova have undertaken to publish a monograph of all Roman mints located in present-day Bulgaria. The numbering system of their catalogues is also geared to this.
Sadly, Nina Hristova died in May 2017. I had the honour of working with them since 2007. Initially I had also worked on Markianopolis, but then limited myself to Nikopolis ad Istrum, where I am co-author.
The following mints are involved:
(1) Augusta Trajana
(2) Anchialos
(3) Apollonia Pontika
(4) Deultum
(5) Dionysopolis
(6) Markianopolis
(7) Mesambria
(8) Nicopolis ad Istrum
(9) Nicopolis ad Nestum
(10) Odessos
(11) Pautalia
(12) Serdica
(13) Philippopolis
To date, the following volumes have been published:
(5) Dionysopolis 2003 Bulgarian Softcover
(6) Markianopolis 2014 Bulgarian Hardcover
(7) Mesambria 2020 Bulgarian Hardcover
(8) Nkipolis ad Istrum 2021 English Hardcover
(9) Nicopolis ad Nestum 2007 Bulgarian Hardcover
(12) Serdika 2007 Bulgarian Hardcover
The most comprehensive work is Nikopolis ad Istrum with an enormous number of types, which seem to have no end, and which therefore regularly appears in new editions. Whether Prof.Jekov intends to do the same with the other mints, I do not know.
In any case, the softcover edition of Dionysopolis differs from the hardcover editions in its numbering system and its layout. Whether it will be published again as hardcover edition, I do not know either.
With kind regards
Jochen
