My whole collection comprises merely ca. 100 Roman coins. I mainly collect nice portraits of Roman emperors as well as rare emperors, types and nominals.
My favorite emperors are Carausius, Allectus and Trebonianus Gallus.
Just recently I focus on sestertii with beautiful portraits as you can see in my gallery.
Comments on my coins are appreciated :)

Very nice gallery kc. I have enjoyed looking at it. The Carausius denarius is interesting, there must be several scenarios as to why it has been chiselled in half.

Andreas,
I spend too much time in your gallery as it is! ;)
Just keep repeating to yourself:
"Send Mark the Pacatian, send Mark the Pacatian, send Mark the Pacatian!"

p.s. killer gallery!

Very nice collection! I especially like selection of fine portraits.
The one you chose as your avatar is my favorite :)
Thanks!

I can't decide which of your APs I like better.
mz

I can ;)
I love that forest green patina :o

My favourite portrait is Balbinus'. The fine patina accentuates the details of Balbinus' portrait. I like that one.
-
I'm very fond of your Antoninianus of Philip II.
-
Hi Bud,
I like the heaviness of the coin. With 6.23g it is a real heavy weight.
Problem: I have put a new coin in my gallery and the links above do not show the coins they normally should because all coins have rotated.

That's because you didn't use the correct links found under 'file information'.

I have just added a nice Carausius Antoninian with full planchet. It is in perfect condition and has some silvering.
Besides it is a rare type which is not listed in RIC.

New: Portraitseries of Allectus
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-61234
-
When I first viewed the coin my immediate thought was that the specimen was ‘redenominated’, but I hesitated to weigh in because I couldn’t back my opinion with any facts. Very interesting indeed; so what may seem, to the uneducated eye, to be a 'mutilated' coin is in fact a very interesting piece of monetary history. This should give one pause when examining a coin that seems to have been damaged (counter stamp? bankers' mark? re-valued? emperor's image or a deity defaced?)
-
I agree with Bud, very interesting!!!
I knew about countermarks sometimes used to revalue older coins, but I never knew about adding a radiate design to achieve this. Fascinating!
And I thought it was a badly tooled coin :-[
-
Hi Bud, Hi Steve,
I got this interesting Sestertius on ebay.uk for only 30 BP because most of the viewers thought that the scratches have been made in the present I guess. But in my opinion they are original.

Trajanus Decius Antoninian with curious portrait:

Great portrait. He's got the "Thousand Yard State" (from Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket).

That IS interesting, isn't it?
That's a familiar portrait but it's too early in the morning for me to place it.
Definitely not Decius, though, is it?

I think of Pacatian, who was usurper in Pannonia.

Andreas,
Yes, Pacatian is the only one who might fit that description, but again, would the dies not have been in different locations? And Pacatian was not around all that long, was he? OK, his coins were all struck at Viminacium. Is it possible that Decius would reuse those dies? Experts?
I agree with Lloyd's Gallery page comment regarding the new Gordian III: A cool coin with a lot of character that begs to be held in one's hand :)
mz
-
I do not think that the averse of this coin was struck with Pacatian dies.
Maybe the die-catter did not know the look of Decius and he remembered Pacatian.
Compare the busts of Philipp II. on provincial coins of Vimincacium with the portraits of Pacatian for example and you will see that they are almost equal.

Vividly life like portrait - just great, particularly the furrowed brow and the seemingly "we are not amused" expression! He has a distinctly portrayed air of condescension about him.

Andreas,
As I mentioned in the other thread regarding this coin:
What a cool coin! Love the way the oarsmen look like they are actually pulling at the oars.
mz
-
Wonderful example.
I can just imagine Hadrian sitting in the shade of the stern covered area, yelling occasional directions to the crew while taking in the passing scenery and sipping on the occasional drop of red. "Antinous pass the grapes over here!"
Hadrian's tour of the empire... what a way to go! 8)

More like "Antinous, peel me a grape will ya?".
A great book is Marguerite Yourcenar's "Memoirs of Hadrian."

Andreas,
I have to say that I am liking these provincials a lot more these days as they almost always seem to have interesting and (for the most part) well-wrought reverses. This one is no exception.
A beautiful coin!
A question for whomever can answer it:
Were the celators/engravers "farmed out" to the provinces or were they locals, possibly having been taught by the experts?

A famous type on coins of Septimius Severus:
Legio XIIII Gemina Martia Victrix was an elite legion which gained its fame by defeating Queen Boudicca in 61 A.D. At the end of the 2nd century it was stationed in Carnuntum (Austria) and it was the first legion to declare for Severus.

Great coin. That is one mean looking corpulent Nero. From his facial expression it is as if he has bad indigestion, accompanied by chronic wind. You would not want to cross his path in this state. Even the eagle on the reverse looks worried enough to take flight. Perhaps he thinks he's the next meal for the great man.
-
Andreas,
Nero's sullen, contemptuous expression is palpable on this beautiful coin.
Bravo!

Dear friend Mark :)

-
Andreas,
A very strong portrait and a fantastic reverse!
I like it!
Do we know which or whose arch that happens to be?
mz
-
Yes, of course, Mark.
It is the triumphal arch of Drusus, which was build 9 BC. and belonged to the aqueduct Aqua Marcia. Today it is standing behind the Porta San Sebastiano, which is a city gate of the Aurelian wall in Rome. The Via Appia went through the city gate and also through the triumphal arch.
Does someone know if the equestrian on the top of the triumphal arch still exists?
Best Regards
Andreas
-
Andreas,
Yes, I see it on the map now.
Sorry to say that I did not get to that part of the city.
Thanks for that!

That lump on top of the triumphal arch isn't there on the coin, so presumably it's been added later, after the statue was removed.

as long as some emperors are missing in my collection I will see to it that I can fill these gaps.

generally I would agree, Mark, but there are perfect examples of this type out there
(some forum members have such stunning pieces). but I did not want/could not spend
a few thousand dollar for a perfect Marc Antony, that is the problem. :( ;)

Now a Drachm from Sicily:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-96098
:)
-
Listed as withdrawn on the auction website. ??? With Sicilian bronzes there is one obvious reason that comes to mind.
-
If it's the same coin from the recent auction, I heard from the director of the auction house it was withdrawn as a fake!
-
Many Sicilian bronzes are tooled, others are fake.
Apparently the consignor had no scruples to sell it as genuine.
-
the dealer said that he checked the coin with three London dealers and an auctioneer and all had said that it is OK.
that was the message I got twenty minutes ago. ???
-
the dealer said that he checked the coin with three London dealers and an auctioneer and all had said that it is OK.
that was the message I got twenty minutes ago. ???
Did he say which dealers said it was authentic? Ask him why it was withdrawn from Roma Auction V. If Richard Beale and Italo Vecchi saw reason to withdraw the coin I would not feel comfortable owning it.
I would have bid on this coin if it stayed in the auction. Having been withdrawn, I wouldn't touch it.
EDIT: That being said, I don't know why it was deemed a forgery, but I would have to trust the opinions of experts.

yes I think so, too, Molinari. will ask him. thanks.

Now, that is a formidable man!

He must have been, the way he pulled the empire together.

After some months of Absence I "found" a new coin that I really like, because of its historical background,

Can you recommend any German literature for this field?
Another Problem is that my English is not so well that I understand scientific literature.
Best regards,
kc
Google and find academia.edu
In Search put Wolfgang Fischer-Bossert
I found this article in his publications and articles
Die Eule der Athena, in U. Wartenberg and M. Amandry (eds), ΚΑΙΡΟΣ. Contributions to Numismatics in Honor of Basil Demetriadi (New York 2015), pp. 45-54.
and it has more references.

Try and find articles by Christof Boerhinger and Christian Habicht.
Once you get into them you can find references in the bibliography.
How is your French?
Francoise DeCallatay writes loads on coins. He is on academia and so is Andrew Meadows, Catherine Lorber in English.
Remember the later the reference the more controversial it is because they often update older but sacred texts.
See if you can access JSTOR-google it.
I believe that Schweizer Munzblatter a Swiss numismatic source is on-line somewhere.
