Title: What's new at Potator's ?
Post by: Potator II on April 17, 2009, 11:36:05 am
Hi,

Quite a while since I posted here. I've added some pics to my gallery.
My Plautilla series is growing constantly. Among the 14 types of denarii minted for her in Rome, there are now 11 showing Here (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=1003&page=1&sort=ta), 5 of them being newly added to my collection.

I also added today an Antioch tetradrachm minted for Otacilia Severa : Here (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-42694)

Corrections and comments are, as always, welcome
Thanks for looking

As always, you have impeccable taste!  Very few have the resources you have to acquire such quality coins, but more telling still, even fewer have your keen eye to select the best of the best...

Best, Noah

Thanks all,

Yet another Plautilla added. Now 12 out of 14 different types I've recensed for the Rome mint.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-42871

To complete the series, I need now to find a decent CONCORDIA AETERNAE and the very rare CONCORDIA FELIX featuring the 2nd portrait (vertical ridges and low bun)

I wish you copious luck in finding the two to complete the series. I too know what it's like to search and search (sometimes in vain) for that one elusive coin to fill a hole in my collection. At least we don't suffer alone.

Wonderful gallery BTW.

Hi,

Yesterday was Lyon (Lugdunum) annual coin fair. Not THE big big coin fair as one could expect, but quite a few nice coins, enough for my purse actually.

I came back with a few new coins. Two new characters in my gallery : ORBIANA (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-43305) and HOSTILIAN (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-43304)

and two Siliquae for emperors already represented, but not with silver : THEODOSIVS I (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-43303) and ARCADIVS (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-43302)

Coins to which I should add a recent acquisition from a bid sale : DIVA FAVSTINA II (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-43306) which has probably had better days, but I loved the veiled portrait

Thanks for looking

Hi,

My first Delmatius coin ever is here (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-43979)

Very difficult to photography because of a thick green patina, very pleasant in hand, but AAAARGGGH, it took ages to get a mediocre pic  :P

For a change, I show you a coin I've been searching for ten years or so.
It's a gold ecu minted in Dombes in 1641 for Gaston d'Orleans, prince of Dombes.

Not yet in hand, but I can show you the dealer's pic

Dombes - Gaston d’Orléans (1627-1650) Ecu d’or - 1641.
Av. : +•GASTO•FR VN•REG•VSVFR•PRIN•DOMB•G•
Rv. : +:DOMINVS•ADIVTOR•ET•REDEM•ME•1641:
3.31g -
Ref : Divo manque cf. 177 var. de ponctuation - Fr. 129

"La Dombes" is a region of France situated between Lyon, Villefranche sur Saone and Bourg en Bresse, which has been ruled by princes under the authority of the kings of France during the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, with allowance of minting their own currency.

Their coins were merely copied from the french royal coins, just changing the names and symbols, so that people (most of them couldn't read at this time) would take them as equal to french coins. They were legal tender in the whole kingdom. My interest in that coinage comes from me living a few kilometers from the border of that region. When I started collecting them, 10 years or so ago, there was no recent reference book about them, the last one had been edited in the 19th century. Since then Mr Jean Paul DIVO, the famous swiss numismatist, has writen a very useful book about Dombes coinage, that gives a much better view of the relative rarity of these coins, some of them being very rare.

My growing collection is here (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=2076)

Nice, but I'm sold to ancients ;D

Au fait, pas si mal ta photo du Delmatius, peut-être un tantinet trop de luminosité mais rien de dramatique.

Not that I disregard roman coins (all the contrary I like to look at other's treasures at the moment) but I've acquired three major gold coins for the Dombes principality (sold as is, I had to buy it all or say goodbye ) that left me dry for some months.

A very rare franc a cheval for Jean II, prince de Bourbon (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-44576)

Another very rare franc a cheval for Pierre II, prince de Bourbon (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-45627)

And an unpublished and unrecorded pistole for Louis II de Montpensier (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-44633)

The whole collection is now visible on my blog Here (http://monnaiesdeladombes.blogspot.com/)

Although I've been a bit far from ancient roman coins for a while, I'm not completely out out of the "coins stuff" : I've been working at my blog dedicated to the Dombes coinage (http://monnaiesdeladombes.blogspot.com/) to give it the appearance of a proper website.
At first, the purpose was just to show off my own collection. Now a step has been passed over with the addition (growing slowly as I need to get permission from the pictures owners) of rare and valuable specimens that have been sold in the past. A side effect of a ressource available online is that people looking for references ends on my blog. For them, it's a very good way to collect informations about what they have, and for me to be informed of new types or unpublished dates that I can add to the pages.

Hi all,

Three additions to be shown (well, there are four actually, but I have hard time photographying one of them)

A nice (I find it nice) denarius of Vitellius, they are not that easy to find in good condition ; my first coin for this emperor (one less to go in the portrait gallery) : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-53061

A syro-phenician tetradrachm for Gordian III. It's a rather common type, but the style and conservation "jumped" to me when I saw it first : I simply HAD to get it : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-53060

The third one is an upgrade of a demi ecu for Anne-Marie Louise d'Orleans, princesse of Dombes, minted in 1673. It's a rare opportunity to have an aEF example of this thought after coin : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-53059

Hi all,

Yesterday was Paris coin fair. As it's a bit far from home I had never been there before (not in Paris I mean, just at the coin fair) and I have to say it'st worth the journey. It was also a very special day as we decided to meet there with other members of the french forum : we wre actaully 12 of us to visit the fair : the plague of locusts  ;D

Anyway, we've had a great time, and the opportunity to come back with a few additions to our collections.

For myself here they are :

A decent IOVI CRESCENTI reverse for Valerian II : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-53575

A beautiful Maxentius follis with Dioscuri and she wolf suckling reverse : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-53573

A rare Aurelian and Severina double sestertius (or dupondius, I have not completely sorted out that at the moment) : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-53574

And a wonderful (to my eyes) LVNA LVCIFERA denarius for Julia Domna : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-53576

You can see below a detail of the biga

Thanks for looking, comments and corrections welcome, of course

Hi all,

After big purchases earlier this year I've been quiet for a while but GB29400 who is a good friend and dealer found for me the following coins from Dombes, for those who find an interest in Feudal France....

First is a "denier tournois" for Louis II de Montpensier of the highest rarity :

A "double tournois" for his son François II
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-59217

A "double tournois" and a "denier tournois" for Marie
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-59219

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-59216

Hi all,

here are most probably my last purchases for 2010 : let's say Santais involved  ;D

A decent if not EF dynastic denarius featuring Domna and Geta, quite pitted from the picture but nicer in hand as it has a very nice dark grey tone, not showing here  :

And a wonderful (to my eyes at least) AE20-22 from Larissa, Thessaly, with an incredible glossy dark patina :

Lol...I would hope you would pass on that bit of advise! :)

Coins like that in my collection bug the heck out of me. They look so nice in hand and then digital turns them into somthing less. It is still a very fine coin, I was just curious. :)

Hi,

I would like to show you my latest addition :

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-64496

It's a Roman republic quartuncia minted in Rome circa 217-215 BC.
Its quite a small coin weighing 3,41 gr for 15 mm diameter
According to RCV, "the quartuncia is the smallest denomination of the Roman bronze coinage, and has been briefly produced during the semilibral weight standard. With the further decline in the weight of the bronze coinage after 215 BC, issue of the experimental quartuncia ceased."

Two more.

I just added a Gordian III dupondius : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-64702
which is far of "just out of the mint" but still a dupondius

And a Volusian sestertius showing a portrait of nice style IMHO, althought it's not as round as one would expect, but you know, during the second half of the third century, things were not going properly...https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-64703

Yesterday was Paris coin fair at "Palais Brogniart". Quite a good one judging what I come back with.

A Roman Republic silver sestertius : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-65482

A Constantine the Great follis featuring Sol on reverse : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-65481

A very thought after and tough to find AE1 for Valens. Due to a thick and glossy green patina the picture does not do it justice, but it's rather pleasant in hand : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-65480

Those are all very nice additions.  I don't get into the late stuff much, but I like the AE1s.  Your imperatorial coins are my favorite, with some exquisite pieces.  If one has a large enough budget, anyone can get expensive pieces (not meant to be an insult to anybody), but it takes a discerning collector like yourself to acquire  pieces of refined taste and not just gaudy items.   Had I a larger budget, I would also go after similar pieces.  Alas, my budget has gone to far less sexy items; sump pumps, car maintenance, etc; the usual story when one is relatively young and a homeowner.  If I had a Bill Gates-type budget, I would specialize in Sestertii of Claudius Gothicus up to 294 A.D., with a sub-specialty of Nero Perinthus and Lugdunum Sestertii.

I also enjoyed your commentary on many of the pieces and was surprised that many have relatively few views.  My gallery only has items from the past couple of years - ones with dealer photos, since I lack the coin photography skills.  I have a few decent pieces in there, but they are like Miss Havisham; ruined elegance compared to your fine coins.

It is my dream to go to a coin show/fair of ancient coins some day.  With a young family, I cannot travel just for that purpose, and as far as I can determine, there is no show in my area.  I would love to just go and look for hours, and hours!  Someday, I hope to do just that.

Two more additions in my tetrarchy gallery with two common but nicely preserved and almost fully silvered Folles for Diocletian and Galerius :

The Diocletian is not that spectacular being a bit weakly struck on obverse :

Hi all,

For a change I have created a new gallery. It's not ancient to say so, but a selection of various coins from kings of France to WW II, in various metals and denominations.
When people happen to know I am a collector of coins, they often ask to look at them, not exactly knowing what they are putting the finger on. I show this selection, because they can see Kings who "talk to them", and they can hold gold and silver, pieces of History in their hands.
Depending on the interest they show at this stage, I will go further down into the heart of my passion...or not.

Hope you'll enjoy (but all of you are already hooked on coin collecting...)

Here it is : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=3530

Thanks for the kind and encouraging comments

I've been looking for a decent Valerian antoninianus for ages. Surprisingly it's very hard to get together good metal, good centering and good style, not mentionning good state of preservation for that emperor. I finally found one having a reasonable proportion of all the above : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-67346

And as I'm always reluctant to buy just one coin at a time (it's just like peanuts and fries, you know, you can't eat just one  ;D ) I bought also a Severus Alexander featuring a handsome Mars on reverse : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-67347

I also just added three more coins to my feudal series of Dombes. Not that they are spectacular, but of highest rarity, two of them being second recorded examples of douzains minted in AD 1600 and 1606 :

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-67352
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-67351

The "gros de Nesle" is a very rare denomination as such (less than ten known all years together) :

Yes, it arrived at home.

Here is the last Plautilla denarius I told you about a few days ago : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-91703

Seems that Plautilla has been quite popular on the boards lately, or is it just me ?

By the way I created a new gallery that will host my new collecting theme : the she-wolf suckling Remus and Romulus. At the moment I included coins that I had shown before in my others galleries, but they will all be put together as to have an easy overview for those interested. Through time, I hope being able to assemble an interesting group as a lot of emperors have minted them in various metals during the roman Empire : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=4418

Thanks for looking

Love your new collection of the she wolfs! I have a little hoard of the VRBS ROMA type, as I used to collect them. I also have a few others, my favorite being a
Gallienus with she wolf reverse. I look forward to your additions!

Not in the best of it's shape, but quite scarce and still nice due to a dark green color enhanced by a desert patina, here is another She-wolf suckling twins for Maxentius :

Not she-wolves everytime...

Here are a Philip II as Augustus sestertius featuring a deep green with hints of red patina : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-94054

And a superb (at least to my eyes) Arcadius AE4 (remember it's only 14 mm and 1,27 gr) : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-94055. One hasn't often the opportunity of seeing those tiny things in the best of their shape

I just added two coins I got from coin fairs in Grenoble (Claudius) and Paris (Augustus) earlier this october

Augustus denarius, RIC # 119 : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-103299
Although the flan is a bit short and the metal somewhat cristalized, I falled in love with the reverse and its chariot

Claudius dupondius, RIC # 94 : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-103297
This one I wanted to go with my other Claudius, an as, that as been previously discussed on the boards and determined as coming from a branch mint in Spain. The styles being so different I had to get another one : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-34558

Comments and precisions are welcome, as always

Hi all,

For the first time in 32 years I've not bought any roman coin in a year, reason why I'm not on the boards so often.
Today, I post two coins in my gallery (well 1,5 coin actually) that I hadn't before for some reason, although they've been in my trays for a while now.

Both are from roman Gaul

Arausio dupondius (Orange) featuring Agrippa and Octavian : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-113548

Nemausus halved dupondius (Nîmes), from the third type (lacking PP) : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-113547

Hi all,

Again quite a while since I posted a new coin to my gallery.

The following are all my purchases of roman coins in 2014 and 2015.

The Faustina Diana Lucifera is the fourth coin in a new subsection devoted to Diana Lucifera. So far I have now four of them : Faustina Jr, Domna, Plautilla and Gordian III. Here is Faustina : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-121660

Although the republican denarius is a 2014 buy, I've had quite a hard time taking a good picture of it (and not sure I got it satisfactory), plus me being lazy, it had to wait before being displayed : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-121661

The two last are Alexandrian tetradrachms that I bought today at a coin fair in Aix les Bains (France), which is a cosy and cute spa town in the alps with an unexpectedly big annual coin fair for such a small city. They are both well struck on a full flan, and with an acceptable style :
Tacitus : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-121659
Diocletianus : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-121658

Hi all,

Yet another Mark Antony denarius entering my collection. The quality isn't at it's best in terms of preservation, but it's quite rare a type, and the style is so good I could pass. Mark Antony's portraits, for distinctive they are, often bear a crude vision of the guy, while this one looks much more refined. Anyway, I like it !!

Very nice additions.

Re the Marcus Aurelius, does the lighter green patina match those lighter green splotches on the face and neck on the obverse, or is simply due to lighting.

I agree re the Gallienus, I think it is the colour, but pleasing overall on the eye despite the flan being broken.

A long and fun story comes to an end : I've been chasing the Trajan Decius Divi series for 18 years now, and just happened to get the 22nd and last to have a complete set (apart from minor variations as to legend or drapery and such). Anyway the 22 main types are here, with eleven emperors honored with either altar and eagle.

New RR denarius added :

Hello friends.

Sometimes a coin type is so common that one always thinks time will come when they will find the right one....and time flies and they still don't have it.

The L Calpurnius Piso Frugi Appolo/horseman is one of those. Although I've been collecting ancient for 40 years, I never found myself ready for one

Here it is now, with decent centering and wear, and a wonderful tone. I love it : https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-155187

Yours is (was) a fabulous example Steve, and clearly shows a whip.
However, I think mine shows a whip too, enven though it's different from yours. Maybe is it a double whip versus a simple one on yours

When you compare to examples with a palm or a torch they really look different

On the example from Wildwinds, from the same reverse die, the whip is more obvious than on my example

Aaaaaah, I see ... perhaps your coin shows a kinkier kind of whip? (a cat-of-two-tails?)
