Nah, those are sort of huts. The Pentagon is the largest, followed by ours or another one then ours.  Remeber we are considering volume not height.   Height wise, I knew some television tower in Russia was the tallest.

Hello Alex,

The House of the people or casa Poporului in Romanian is still the second largest building in the world,
I've been there a few times when I was wandering through the centre of Bucuresti, Its realy huge to see!!!! mostly I was there at the Netherlands Embassy because I had to arrange papers for my wife ( I'm married with an Romanian girl)
I never was inside this building but sure I would like to see whats in there! I like the city very much anyway  ;D
In about 4 weeks I will be on a 4 week long holiday in Romania,

You know that the old men don't love their photo.... my will be the photo of an old man of 76 years.   ;D ;D

Above I have wanted to joke with Mayadigger.. he looks for a my photo like one search one "scalp.". I have put the my smaller niece plays " do the Indian.".

Here to Rome when it is told "do the Indian" it also means that  doesn't want to be understood.. .it is a way of think "levantine" (of the middle east).. very distant from your Anglo-Saxon mentality. .

Now has embarked with a speechify that I don't know like it there will have returned from the "Translator."

Where was that? I used to live in Cornwall, wrecks there usually last a few days before the storms break them up. They're all right as long as there's no dead bodies involved, but I'll never forget the night they lost a ship (due to bad design, the air inlets to the engines were too low and let water get in the diesel) and a lifeboat with all hands, and a second ship disappeared without trace somewhere not too far away.

A latest photo of me...I very rarely show up on film.  This was taken a few days ago as my lovely part of the world, the Northeast of the US, was getting its usual "blizzard like conditions".  We're expecting over 170 inches this season...whoopee!!  BTW... that's my 3 year old son helping me with the lazyman's snowman.  ;D

If you look at the sign behind Hermes' head it says union square.

I do not typically make use of public transportation (except when flying, of course, or unless I absolutely have to take the train), but the person I was travelling with was a lot more adventurous than I, so I made an exception.

Driving around Manhattan (in a rental car) for a few hrs was one of the highlights of the trip (driving there I truly felt in my element!), although we soon determined that it would not be very practical to keep the car for the duration of our stay in NY (we'd driven to NY from outside the state).

Here is a picture of me from about 5 years ago.  The hair is a little longer and grayer, and I have a few more wrinkles.

As a little background, I live on a tropical island in the Western Pacific.  The island I live on is called Tinian.  It is about 5 miles wide and 10 miles long.  It is part of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, a little known part of the United States.

I have been coin collecting for about 25 or 30 years.  I started out with US coins and slowly moved to ancients in the last 10 or 15 years.  I speciallize in coins from the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Well, I guess it's my turn. Photo is of three bums in Jacksonville, Florida, and one good woman (married to the bum in the middle). I'm the one on the left, teaching that palm tree a lesson it won't ever forget.   ;)

I pondered what photo to post here. Finally settled on this one. Never had big adventures. Don't have cool photos of me while traveling around the world. Just a pretty normal guy. And some of the members of the boards no doubt recognize that daily life can be a pretty big adventure sometimes, and that is fine too.

Three pretty normal, average, middle-aged guys. All of us missing one leg each. Two years ago the three of us rode bicycles as a team from Seattle, WA to Jacksonville, FL. Visited with amputee support groups along the way, as well as 15 rehab hospitals. With the notable exception of my marriage and my children, the single best thing I've done in my life to date. I am more proud of this than anything else. So it's a worthy topic to share, I guess.

Mark

PS -- check out www.amputeesacrossamerica.com for info about the folks doing the ride this year (from San Diego to Boston).

I agree, climbing mountains can get as addictive as collecting coins.  When I was younger, I climbed over 50 peaks in one summer in the Casades and Sierra Nevadas of California and a few random peaks in Nevada and Utah.  But that was a long time ago and before I moved to a tropical island and had a kid.

I did talk my wife into climbing Mt. Kina Balu, 4101 meters, on Borneo while she had just gotten pregnant with our daughter.  It has the biggest stairway in the world.  You really get tried of steps after awhile.

Now I live on a tropical island, in the Mariana Islands, with the highest point is 200 meters.  I do spend some time walking in the jungles and exploring caves.  You never know what you will find in the jungle because of all that is left over from when the Japanese ruled this area and World War II.  Still find live bombs in the jungle, which adds a little adventure to the hiking.

By the way, a volcano three islands (Anatahan) north of us sent a cloud of ash over my islands (Tinian) a week and a half ago.  It made the sky dark around 10:30 AM to about 1 PM.  I have added a picture of the sun that was taken around 10:30 in the morning.  It also made a great sunset.  I have added another picture of my daughter at the beach on that day.

If I had the money to go gadding around the world I don't think wild horses would drag me away from volcanoes! Of all nature's wonders, those are the ones which fascinate me yet. I've never seen one in action yet, but I will.

I was descending Ampato in May 2000 when Sabancaya boomed a column of ash and caused a "slush slide" shooting down the next arroyo.

You can have them.

That sort of stuff's scary. I once sat in a valley off Glencoe in a sudden thaw and watched half a dozen gullies avalanche one after the other. Not the time to be caught in one!

My scariest experience up there was the first time I went in winter, I set out for a walk and ended up hepling to carry down my first dead body, a walker who was going along the edge of the cornice in a near whiteout (!!!!!!!!!). The inevitable happened, she fell through, went almost 1000 feet down the mountainside, and died as we were carrying her down to cloudbase to meet the helicopter. Not nice at all, she was screaming all the way till she died.

Ave!

Well, here's something you don't do every day...hand-feeding stingrays.  8)

Just back from Grand Turk Island, BWI. These pix were taken on the tiny island of Gibb's Caye where the stingrays come in every afternoon to get some easy dinner.  Below is a big Atlantic Ray (3.5 feet tip-to-tip and about 75 pounds) coming right at you!  :o

Below is me, feeding the rays in about one foot of water. Swimming with them was another story.... ::)

Lot's of fun!

In the early 90's, before my daughter was born, I got a chance to SCUBA drive with Manta Rays in the German Channel at Yap.   I also enjoyed looking at the displays of stone money in several of the different villages we visited.

Howard, funny you should mention it. Sheri and I are off to Micronesia in November to scuba dive with the Mantas on Yap and hang with the sharks on Palau. Too Cool!

Hi Mayadigger,

I live in Micronesia, so I have been to most of the different areas.  Can't say I have been to most of the islands, since there are thousands of them.

I have been to Palau (the wall dives are great!), Yap, Truk (didn't like the people, but great diving), Majuro (in the Marshall Islands), Pohnopei and Kosrae.  I have also been on all the settled islands in the Mariana Islands and one of the active volcanic islands up north (Pagan).

If any one makes it out to Tinian, I will be happy to show you around, except during June or July.  We are in California during that time.  By the way, there is a big sixtieth anniversary of the atomic bomb dropping happening here in August.  Four of the crewmembers, including Tibbits, of the Enola Gay will be here.

Seeing all the Mountain pictures posted on this link makes me feel at home and has inspired me to post some of my own.I will give a brief decription of the pics from left to right.

1.That's me (in red circle) belaying the last pitch of the arduous 4000 ft ice and rock west face of Huanya Potosi alt.20,000+ ft.This was done in one 26 hour continuous push.Pic taken by an associate meeting up with us for much needed supplies and assistance.
2.Climbing 150ft wall of "plastic"(perfect climbing) ice on a glacier above base camp.
3.Me "zenning" out at a base camp before ascending what turned out to be an epic ascent during hurricane force winds of a 21,000ft peak in Bolivia.

The next set of pictures is why I became semi-retired from Mountain guiding and other extreme adventures. With another reason on the way in Nov.

Scotland varies from day to day. You can get gorgeous snow-ice, when everything's easy, then you get a thaw and it can vanish just like that. I once saw a 50-foot icicle come away from the rock (it was thawing hard and there was water running down the back of it) with a climber attached. He was OK, he just swung out of the way on a peg. Of cource, I was immediately below, traversing across to get to the safer slabs round the corner. We were moving together, I don't know how I managed to stay put, and I finished the climb (Tower Ridge on the Ben) with concussion. Then another time you get half an inch of verglas, nothing grips, and the easy routes become hard. You're dead right about the weather; I was once involved in rescuing a walker who was blown off her feet and several yards sideways on Bidean nam Bian in Glencoe (God alone knows what they were doing up there; I was hard put to it to keep my feet on the road); she went over the edge into a gully, and fortunately for her, kept a grip of her axe. She just about managed to stop, with several broken ribs, just short of the rocks 500 feet down.

I don't have many pictures of myself, but this one re-surfaced recently. It's a bit old (1992) but I don't think I've changed that much. I look very sporty with all those names emblazoned across my T-shirt, but don't be fooled (the tummy's a giveaway). Ave!

I am both Peruvian and Belgian. I love Belgian beer and the high Andes (as a sight not to
climb) The highest mountain in Perú is the Huascaran (6768 mt about 18,000 ft) and today my wife and older son are very close to it. Make up your minds and come down and see it.
Eduardo

If you don't enjoy the beers from the Belgian Trappist Monks, you have a dead palate.

Besides, drinking is fun...or at least as seen on this sign photoed on Caye Chaulker, a tiny coral atoll 15 miles of the coast of southern Belize, POP 315.

[See first photo below]

Hoo Haa! Ain't that grand...and I give you joy! You certainly won't find an advertisement like this in the USA or Europe, either. But I give them 4 stars for honesty.

And speaking of drinking.... ::)

Just a few months back, (stay with me, now) Sheri and I scuba-dived on Grand Turk, a smallish island in the British West Indies, POP 2,300. One day, we dived off the coast of an even smaller island, Salt Caye, POP 74. After our two dives, we lunched in the only open restaurant/bar on the island. The proprietor challenged me, or anyone else, to take a shot of all five of his various animal-named brews...and still stand up.

Well! Not being one too let the USA down, I went for it, dispite Sheri's misgivings...and that's not a good thing, trust me.

Here's pix of my third drink.

[See second photo below]

And after...

[See third photo below]

DOH! Happy, happy Kevin! ::)

Here's my souvinier...Wolf!

[See fourth photo below]

And last but not least, here's a photo of Sheri (SWMBO) having fun sitting on the double-headed Jaguar throne of the ruling lord of Uxmal, located before the House of the Govenors, Yucatan, Mexico.

[See fifth photo below]

The interesting thing about this throne is that it was not discovered "in situe", rather it was returned to the surface from where it had been inturned 500 years in the past by two of the most colorful and insiteful explorers that you could ask for - Stephens and Catherwood (God bless them both!), circa 1840.

ok. finally, I have decided to show you my picture!  ;D

This is me at an excavation this summer in Israel, at Gat, the most powerful of the five Philistine cities.  If you look to the lower right, there is one of my bigger finds, a small Iron II A juglet, completely intact  8).  After this picture, I found another one sitting next to it.

I've got connections.  8)

No, just kiding.  My grandmother's friend (an egyptologist) suggested that I go on a dig with him, but the US state department wouldn't let me, because I was under 17 and without a gaurdian.  So I ended up finding one on line (dig-gath.org) and applying.  This was one of the few that allowed 16 and up, as opposed to 18 and up.    So I was there for three weeks doing archaeology! It was awesome.  I highly recomend this one, it is very "volunteer" oriented.  (I put it in quotes because my friend described it as very much like the whitewashing scene in Tom Sawyer, because you have to pay to do it).

Very nice!  Do you have one of the cameras on which you can turn the monitor around so that you can look to frame your own photo?  Or have you an iMac G5 allowing you to photograph yourself sending yourself an e-mail?   Pat L.

no... that would be nice.  I meant I never knew how to downsize the picture from 900 KB to under 250.  But finally I learned.   :)  I had someone else take my picture.
I love Macs, but it was just this particular thing that I could never figure out.

Well here's a bit of a fun one - Here's my new set of legionary armor (minus the helmet, sword and caligae). It made a great Halloween costume, and I completed the look by drinking limoncello from a non-Roman era glass mug.
Sorry for the darkness of the picture - It was taken indoors and without a flash. But I ain't putting that armor back on just for a picture - it's harder to get in and out of than you might think! ;)

OK, Barry, here's my boy.  Somewhere I have the photo a Viennese photographer took of me, kneeling, while I was taking this picture.  Basemetal's light on the shoulders did greatly remind me of him.  If I can find that photo, I promise I'll post it.  Unhappily, Michelangelo only saw the Belvedere torso and the Laocoon, much inferior works; he would have loved this one, which, I cannot prove but strongly suspect, was made for one of the kings of Pergamon.  That time.  More or less that region, too, though the artists had long traveled widely.  From where I was kneeling masked only by a Nikon, the picture is pretty funny.  Pat L.

I've seen Barry.  He's a young guy (mid to late 30's I'd guess).  I pegged him to be much older from his knowledge base.

He did call me a "Perv" accusing me of purchasing my CTG barb because of the explicit exergue!  and now this?  He wants to see all of our wives?   PERV!!!!!!!!

Ecoli, don't bother, the midwives will be used to fainting fathers-to-be ;), and it's such an overwhelming experience that it's not a shame to faint IMHO. I didn't faint at the birth of my three boys, but after my eldest son was born, I cried with relief and happiness like I think I never did in my life.

This is me with the boys last summer.

Actually you'd have to do something really stupid to get my bees to sting. The hives just sit in a corner, and with no low-flying bees due to the hedge in front of them, you wouldn't know they were there. I open the hives weekly at the height of the season with 40-50 000 bees in each one. I only get about one sting a month, off four hives, with all the aggravation I give them.

That depends entirely on the size of the dog and the way it bites. I know cat owners who are mostly quite scratched up. I wonder where's the fun in there?

What's funny is that I get bit from my fish about once a month.  When I move the rocks to clean gravel, they come up and bite my arms.  Their teeth are too small to break the skin but for their size, they are mean!

I still have scars on my arms from the 2 siamese cats I used to have a decade ago. They used to poke their claws up my nose in the morning(4 am) to wake me up so they could be fed.

If you did something nasty to your dog once a week, and it bit occasionally, you wouldn't have a complaint. If you pull beehives to bits all the time, you get stung. That's a fact of life; if you don't like it, don't keep bees! The point is, other people don't get stung, and there's no reason why they should. I've had those hives, with close neighbours, for six years, and never annoyed anyone.

Come to this late but in for a penny......

The first is me and the two most important things in my life, my wife and my son.

The second is me on a bit of R+R from the job in Crete.

The third is my most favourite site from ancient history..............

A fairly innocuous looking field but one which has produced 2 Celtic gold staters of the Corieltauvii, 9 Republican denarii, a Julius, 7 Augustus and 2 Tiberius.

The fourth is my hound who accompanies me on all my historical forays in the mud of East Yorkshire, often with much greater enthusiasm!

Since the theme is posting images of those dear to us, I thought I'd post a picture of Jake.
We have two dogs now who are beloved pets.  Buster a lab/chow mix that if human would be Jethro Bodine on the Beverly Hillbillies movie star handsome and in training to be a "Double-naught Spy", and Lucky, a lovely wirehair terrier/basset mix who if human would say:
"I don't eat meat cause I'm a vetrenarian"  Yep.  Beloved but really that dumb.
And then there was Jake.  While he was alive the two above were HIS pets.
Jake used to go flying with me often. He'd sit in the back seat as if it were a stationwagon look out for a while and then go to sleep.  He could count-if it involved how many pieces of ham you'd put back in the refridgerator. He was a fixture at the local airport and would lie in the grass beside the taxiway while planes taxiing for takeoff cast their shadows on him and snooze away. He would somtimes do his "I want to go out" routine and when you got up to let him out, he'd jump into the place you occupied on "his" sofa.  He left us in 1999 but is here everyday in our hearts.

Thank you Pat.  All the honor belongs to my wife.  This certainly raises my admiration of the fairer half of us to a brand new level.

My wife was really wanting the natural birth experience; but after 36 hours of induced labor(induced contractions 4 minutes apart) to open the cervex to only to 7 cm and and a pretty bad reaction to the epidural, both of us could not bare it any more.

Both mother and the baby are fine :)

I agree you can never take too many photos.  My wife's name is Erin.  I don't think she would be fond of Mrs. Vitruvius, when it comes to ancient history and coins she thinks I'm a "dork".   ::)  The only time she shows interest is when she's having trouble sleeping at night.  Then it's "Can you put on that Roman documentary you taped the other night?"  It works every time...she's asleep within minutes!! :)  Oh well, at least I have the Forum to share my thoughts...

Vitruvius, what do you feed that cat??  That's the puffiest blue point I've ever seen!  Beautiful family as well.  Is the little tyke taking after his mom or his dad when it comes to ancients?  ;)

Jbaran,

Thanks for the kind words regarding the family.  Joshua seems to be getting into the ancient world.  The other day we watched "Building an empire"...he seemed really into it!

Sierra is a mix between a blue point siamese and a Himalayan persian.  I think she gets her fluffiness from her dad, who was persian.  All I feed her is steak, chicken, live birds  ;D  No really, purina one about 1/2 cup twice a day.

When I lived in Clearwater, Fl. she was known to go out in the yard to catch and eat the various lizards that roamed the area.  She would also stash remnants in my shoes to be found later.   ::)

Have a good night!

Alright, Alright I give in.

Below you can see me. But, this is me about 13 months ago before chemo. I will send in a nicer image of me once I take a new image.

But I thought I supply you with a bit of laughter.

One thing you shouldnt do. You should never have 8 Kilos of Ancient Coins in your backpack while going through airport security looking like this. If you follow this then you can save up tp 2 hours and dont miss your flight. I assumed that the age of judging people by their looks was long gone, but appearantly not at airports. I was held 2 hours in Philly going to Frankfurt.
LOL.

And to quote my girlfriend: "You look like someone from Metallica"
Well I am drummer, thats how you are supposed to look like.

I was 22 years old when this one was taken.

No pics yet but Buster the Wonder Dog passed away on April 26.  He was 13 and had been with us since 1994.  We lost a family member.  Then on May 10, Corine the Wonder Mom passed away.  Another family member.  Life is quite transient.

That's impressive.  Survival is formative.  I had breast cancer 25 years ago; a quarter century, thanks to prompt action surgically, seems worth celebrating.  I usually mention it only to persons who won't get mammograms, but the quarter century is, yes, worth celebrating.  Pat

Here is a photo of me and my wife Boom (a pretty common Thai nickname)--her 'real name' is Krittiya.  We are at the ski lodge at the top of the Sandia Mountains just outside of Albuquerque, and it was late last summer.  As you can tell, it's sunset.  We were visiting friends who live in Santa Fe.  Boom and I have been married for the better part of six years, and this (besides being on an air plane) is the highest in altitude that she has ever been.  I grew up in the Southwest region of the U.S., and beginning in high school my friends and I have 'bagged' (climbed/hiked) as many 10,000+ foot peaks as possible.  We stopped counting when we hit 35 (half-way to seventy . . . a long story).  Boom was understandably dizzy.  The view from Sandia Peak (sandia means water melon in Spanish) is beautiful.  You can, of course, see the layout of Albuquerque.  The Rio Grande River snakes across your landscape; it is there in the mid-left of the photo, and on a clear day using binoculars (a must have if you like birds), when you hike along the peak a wee bit, you can make out the Rio Grande River Gorge--a very miniature, but beautiful, version of the Grand Canyon.

This is the home of my family. The wooden part was build up on 1689, three hundered years ago. Also from the same age is the cellar you can view on the scan. The name of the house is " Hof Sachslen". the first mention of the house-name is on a pergament from the years around 1280. The oldest bases of the stone-building is from 11 century. Is very amazing to live in an old historical home.

On 1st of July I returned after climbing Mont Blanc ( 4810m, tallest summit in the Alps and Western and Central Europe) on the long Italian route from Gonella. Aka "Pope's Route" because it was first used by a party including the man who later became Pope Pious XI ! (but we all knew Italians are nutz :D )
So those of you that wish to see a bunch of pics, link is below. There are 3 albums, first with the ascent and descent of Mont Blanc, second with visits to Courmayeur and Chamonix, the enchanting base towns of MB, and third back on the mountain to bag an interesting peak.

I love pictures!  Noah, what a beautiful family!
My two are grown, with babies of their own. . .I have a boy, and a girl,
and from these two little rabbits I have 11 grandchildren.

About three years ago I adopted more 'children' they are so much easier to care for!

Here I am in 'Kiss Me Kate' . . . I am a student at the university and this was a university production this past spring semester.

And me with my adopted children, they are miniature schnauzers:
The silver one is Sophie, (she's the boss), the salt and pepper is Sadie
and the black is Sigusmundus, we call him Mr. Sigs.

All true, but in the midst of it all we forgot Andrew, who has changed more in the last year than I could have believed if I hadn't spent 8 years teaching Grades VIII through X.  It's as Rupert said, and it shows in more than that fleeting annoyance on the chin.  Pat L.

It took me a while but I went through all the pages, and what a photo album!  This forum is made up of the most beautiful people!

From the top of the mountain peaks, to the depth of the sea, fellow thespians, travel pictures, those of you in military, wedding pictures, beautiful baby pictures, lovely families, and several very fishy pics, drivers license (what a hoot), and watching one collector grow up on this forum , some made me laugh, (like the cat on the scanner!)  but all made me smile, (saholz that is a great photo, your photographer did an excellent job of shooting underwater!).  Everyone was like a precious coin, each had it's own beauty.

I am proud to be part of such a great group of people!

I was so inpired by all the wonderful pics I had to add a couple more.
1. Onstage
and
2.a collage of me diving, (a spring dive, didn't see any nymphs, and a beach dive)
and my most recent trip (Egypt Dec 05)
I can tell you, the Sphynx does not kiss and tell, I still don't know the secret.

I look forward to viewing posts even more so now that I have a face with the name!

Thank you for sharing!

Is that the centre filling of a wall, rubble and cement?  Have the ashlar blocks been robbed to build other things?
Title: Re: Post a pic of you
Post by: Robert_Brenchley on August 12, 2006, 03:19:42 pm
Yes, that's the rubble centre he's standing on. You can see some of the ashlar left at the bottom, so it's a wall someone was prepared to spend a good bit of money on; squared stone doesn't come cheap in any era unless it's salvaged from somewhere. Near the bottom you can see ashlar blocks which bound the outer shell securely to the core, so it's intended as a strong wall, probably a fortification. The concrete binding the core points to the same conclusion; it's not just loose rubble.

Re: Automan on wall.

Not Mycenae Pat, the construction is completely different.

The concrete and rubble core would point to the walls being from the Roman era.  The ashlars are fairly small, finely finished, rectangular and regular so I am thinking monumental building rather than fortification. The walls also appear to stand in a country with a generally dry warm climate since they seem to have suffered more from stone robbing than from erosion. Well that really narrows it down  ::) so since there is not much else to go on I think Automan will have to tell us the location himself.

NO ONE mentioned Mycenae.  Nor Tiryns, nor Asine, even.  Indeed, if it really has mortar rather than clay rubble, it isn't any Bronze Age wall (Mycenaean, let alone Minoan).  I thought of Gynaikokastro, but nothing preserved so high there.  I thought of Megalopolis, but again it didn't quite look like it.  I mentioned Messene in Laconia because it is so well preserved, and I haven't had a chance to walk the full circuit, and Priene for the same reason.  Looks like too steep terrain for Miletus, but again I haven't seen all of it.  Then there's Epirus, but it's been 45 years since I was there; lots of walls.  But I haven't been to any of the walls and gates in Cilicia, where the indefatigable Ramsay recorded so many Pauline (his interest) cities.  There are more Late Classical-Early Hellenistic walls than almost anyone, except someone like Eugene Vanderpool, ever visited in a lifetime.  And I hardly think it's any part of the Long Walls to Piraeus, though who has visited all the remains of them both?  Eleusis just occurred to me, though the hints of landscape look wrong; folks tend to forget the walls of Eleusis.  Thebes?  Eleutherae?  Vergina?  What about Apollonia in modern Albania?  I never got a chance to go to Albania.
Well, what is it?  Double walls are very hard to identify except in views from low-flying airplanes.  Almost all of them are awesomely well made.

I didn't mean to cause any offence, Pat.  :-[ I am aware of your credentials, I know that you are well-travelled but I thought, with your above remark, perhaps you hadn't actually been to Mycenae. Stupid of me, it is inconceivable that you wouldn't have visited such a famous site and I humbly apologise  :-*. It is thirty years since I was there and, as you obviously know, the bronze-age construction is entirely different, that is why I mentioned it.
As to Automan's wall. Although it could be virtually anywhere and a mortar and rubble core is typically Roman, it has a Greek feel to it  :-\.

Well, coming from someone who hasn't visited many Roman sites, that looks like a pretty impressive demonstration of the strength of the cement mix used by the Romans.  It raises a question.  In Rome, it would have been easy to gather the required materials.  The raw ingredients were limestone and volcanic ash, and there was a volcano on their doorstep. But what did they use elsewhere?  Volcanos could not have always been handy.

Title: Re: Post a pic of you
Post by: slokind on August 13, 2006, 12:46:43 am
Mortar the whole empire had, and Early Byzantine mortair-and-brick walls are full of it, but they didn't have the pozzolana to make hydraulic cement for true Roman concrete of the kind in the Pantheon and the aula of the Mercati Traiani.  I must agree with *Alex that the fill of that double wall does look more like such mortar than like clay (though clayey soils come in colors), and if so it may be later than its general aspect suggests.  Gavignano said "Cyprus", and that sounds like a real possibility (but I haven't been there!).  When does mortar come in?  Earlier east of the Greek peninsula than in it?  Suddenly I'm not sure, in fact I am aware that I never asked myself that question before.  If it's anything like the mortar used with brick in Louisiana, it is quite properly confined to non-bearing functions, since its compressive strength isn't very great.  Mortar calls for re-pointing.  Not, however, in the core of a double wall.  But some of you guys will know more about mortar than I do.
One thing: that ashlar looks like poros (demotic: pouri), since the color in the photo seems very real.

One other thing came to me examining the picture. Do you suppose that  the mortar is original or could it be the work of modern conservationists?

Alex.
Title: Re: Post a pic of you
Post by: moonmoth on August 13, 2006, 02:53:36 am
There are many kinds of mortar, but many of them are less durable than the material they cement together, hence the need to re-point old buildings.  Here's an interesting article by a building conservator:

http://www.buildingconservation.com/articles/limegauging/limegauging.htm

The Roman type (which was known long before, though perhaps not systematised) was particularly durable, probably at least in part because it was not porous and therefore not subject to weathering through frost.  It would even set under water.

That core looks as though it is made with pretty durable cement, to still be standing like that.   Even if it has been reinforced in modern times, it stands quite high and solid.  So it is likely that there is suitable pozzolanic material within  reasonable reach, probably no more than a few miles; and there must also be structures nearby built with the Roman ashlar you can no longer see in the picture.

Concrete (cement mixed with aggregate) has a pretty good compressive strength usually, and many buildings have been made out of it.  There's a very pretty church near here made of light pink concrete.

Wow! I didn't realise it would raise such a discussion!

So, here is the answer: I am, in fact, standing on a wall erected by another civilisation entirely; It's the Great Wall of China!

This section, "HuangHua" (=Yellow Flower, 60 km outside of Beijing), is almost entirely untouched since it was first build during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). If you get a chance to visit the Great Wall, I really recommend this site. It is quite "un-touristified", and my party were basically the only people there. If you are a bit more adventurous than I am, there are better preserved sections of the wall at HuangHua, but getting to them requires hiking gear and you go there at your own risk!

The square blocks are apparently lime stone, and a cement mix using rice and egg whites was used. Most of the center of the wall was just filled with rubble (dirt, stones etc).

There are, of course, other portions of the wall that have been restored to look very much like when it was originally build (such as Badaling and Simitai), but there tourists flock in huge numbers.

Contrary to popular belief, it is not visible from the Moon (and claims to that effect are currently being removed from Chinese school books).

Ah, the Great Maginot Wall of China. ;) Cant wait to see it myself. I've never believed the stories that its visible from space. Its what, four meters wide at the widest points? It would be like trying to spot a single cat hair from two stories up.
Cement was of course known long before the Romans, what the Romans did waas refine the ingredients and the mix, which improved the results dramatically. For example earlier cement took centuries or even longer to set all teh way through depending on the amount used. A few years ago at an archaeological dig in norhten greece a Greek cement slab was cracked and the inside started to ooze out, theslab was dated to around 280BC. The Romans fixed that and also developed cement that would set under water. If they could not get volcanic ash they used to use ground up pottery, a great deal of Roman hydraulic cement is a pleasant pink colour as a result.

Egg white and rice.  Well, at least it sounds more tasty than volcanic ash and quicklime.  I suspect there must have been other ingredients too, or something would have eaten it.

In fact, I now imagine a scenario where the peasants are saying "Need more egg white and rice for the next section, boss" and promptly eating that and substituting earth and excrement.
Title: Re: Post a pic of you
Post by: LordBest on August 13, 2006, 09:05:20 am
It was basically cement mixed with egg white and powdered sticky rice, i believe. Rice was also used in the bricks that many of the better preserved sections are made of, the rice seems to protect against erosion rather well.

When my son was about 16/17 he did some volunteer fire-fighting with his best friends uncle (the real firefighter).  We were living outside of Huntsville, AL and there was a forest fire they were having trouble putting out.  He came home sooty, tired and with a real respect for people that fight fires, esp. forest fires.

That is a nice photo of the plane.

We have watched the news where the only reason a person's house stood was the firefighter, we lived in Calif, and now in Florida, and both places have 'fire-season'!

Well, the historical preservation group that sponsored this worldwide tour of this Nina copy claimed that it was built according to the same specifications as the original.  They claimed this was possible due to fact that it was the descendants of the original builders who built this one.  Furthermore, they claimed to have some of the documents detailing specifics in the construction of the original.  Of course, nothing is completely certain since the original ship is not around anymore.  For all I know, they built this ship to resemble the original and are scamming everyone to make a buck...

According to this page they found a group of shipbuilders still using the same techniques, but it says nothing about surviving documents: http://www.thenina.com/the_original_nina.htm . According to this one: http://www.evgschool.org/Columbus's%20Sailing%20Ships.htm , nobody knows for sure precisely what they were like, which is what I've always heard. My guess is that it's probably a pretty accurate caravel of the right size, with a bit of hype thrown in.

Robert, of course you are right.  It would not be sensible to believe that it is accurate in every detail;  embellishment is sure to occur.  Perhaps our tour guide was a bit overdramatic and decided to alter his speech a little.  I only picked up the generic brochure and listened to two people talk about the ship.  Thanks for going through the trouble of looking up that information! :)

I have been considering doing some charity work. I believe I know what it will be now. Once this catches on, I believe you will find "health centers" such as this popping up everywhere. Another range of diseases vanquished.

Great photo

Yes, that's what we are like. Shown here by the example of my youngest son, Armin.

Drat ecoli!
Your photo pointed out to me my terrible spelling!  It was supposed to be "Free Mamma Gram" a program I initatied to place women in touch with lost parents by sending a free email for them.   The second part of the poster was just my way of multi-tasking. ;)

Although not something I would seek out as an activity... I found myself in the passenger side of a race car this week.  :o  At 140 miles an hour around the track I discovered something new.. I LIKED IT!  ;D

Hi, Robin.  It wasn't so fast, only a Sunday afternoon autocross, with me at the wheel of my beloved 356A entering the frame, caught by a friend with my camera, but I have a good memory, and I think I know how you feel.  At 34, I was just young enough still to fully appreciate it.  The town was Eugene OR, and the organization, which also did rallyes, called itself the Emerald Empire Sports Car Club.  I got the car secondhand.   Never since have I had a sports car (or a boyfriend who was into them...).  Pat L.

Pat! You are a daredevil! I had no idea  ;D

What a beautiful little car!  That must have been a great time.

Although I throughly enjoyed my day of riding, I don't think I would be one to be behind the wheel- I drive like I am carrying a car full of eggs.  It was after my fourth concusion that my driving became so careful.  ;D

Speaking of daredevil female drivers, I had the opportunity to be at the Indy 500 race where Danica Patrick led for several laps.  We were sure she would pull it off, until she ran low on gas during the penultimate lap... :-\  She set a record for a female driver and put the guys to shame!  It was a sight to see; also, those indy cars are extremely loud and you can actually feel the vibration as they pass by.

Best, Noah

Hey Roland,

If you do such gatherings in the future with pscipio and antoninus, let me know. The drive is only a couple of hours for me.

How did you like Oregon Pat?  I lived in Portland for several years and LOVED IT!!  I visited Eugene several times since my uncle lived there.  That is one of the most beautiful parts of the country.  BTW, do any of you live near Louisville, Kentucky?  I have never actually met a fellow ancients collector.  I have not ever even been to an ancients show.  Not much comes my way here, so I rely on these boards and the internet to whet my collector's appetite.  :'(

Best, Noah
