Title: kc's Gallery of Roman coins
Post by: kc on June 24, 2019, 04:42:10 pm
I would like to open a new Gallery because the old one is not actual anymore. Some years ago I sold nearly all of my coins and started a new collection. Having collected all kind of Ancient coins I now collect only Sestertii and medaillons and try to find some with good provenance.
My collection should be small but of higher quality. Some denarii are also in the collection, it is an exception  ;)

Here comes a new sestertius, a Galba with nice patina, super portrait and an extremely fine revers depiction:

It's a more "youthful" portrait of Galba  ;) and that reverse is great.

Thank you very much.

The bimetallic Medaillons of Severus Alexander are very rare. This example is very nice though smoothed but most of the medaillons have been smoothed so it is not so bad.  This piece has a very high relief it looks incredible in hand. Maybe you have more informations about it. I am not sure if this medaillon was struck in 226 AD because there are small medaillons with Liberalitas "COS II" which were struck in 226 AD. This one has "COS III".

This one has "COS III".

I see COS II (with a large gap between the I), which makes more sense together with TR P V.

Even TR P VI is still COS II,

see e.g.. http://numismatics.org/ocre/id/ric.4.sa.68

A spectacular acquisition!

I know of two other specimens of this medallion:

(1)  In ANS, ex Newell Coll.; ex Naville X, 1926, 1765; ex Hirsch 29, 1910, Herzfelder Coll., 1221; ex Sotheby, 29 June 1893, Hermann Weber Coll., 230; doubtless ex Northwick Sale, 1860, 333 (description only). Published by Toynbee, Roman Medallions, p. 85, note 103 and Fagerlie, ANS Medallions, Museum Notes 15, 1969, p. 82.

From the same dies as yours, 55.14g, and also bimetallic according to the Naville X catalogue, though Fagerlie fails to mention this fact and it's not clear one way or the other from the photographs.

(2) In Paris according to Gnecchi no. 21, 50.0g, not illustrated, no mention of bimetallic, but personal examination would be needed to be sure!

Breathtaking medallion. That's about as impressive as Roman bronze gets.
(Or "Roman bimetals" or whatever the right term is for those!)

In the meantime I have been able to acquire some really nice bronzes, for example this Gordianus I Sestertius with strong portrait, almost full legends and dark brown patina.  It comes from an old collections.

This Sextus Pompeius is of exceptional state of preservation. Jacquier called it FDC which it clearly is. It has an old cabinet tone and is an almost perfectly centered strike.
