Dear friends of Nikopolis ad Istrum!
Today I got the 1st copy of Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov, Nicopolis ad Istrum, 2019. It contains altogether 2579 types on 572 pp., all described and depicted b/w. It is the most comprehensive book about the coinage of Nikopolis ad Istrum worldwide. The book can be ordered from me by PM. It is printed on demand. The price is €115.- + shipping. Here I have the statistics oft the last 7 editions:

sum 1830 1984 2210 2331 2482 2561 2579
But this is not the end of the story. The chase for new types goes on! Because the edition 2019 is from February 2019 only the coins until #041 are added to this edition. Therefore I post the coins from #042 upwards to Nikopolis Addenda 27 again. So they can be added to a further edition.
So please see this thread as integral supplement of Nikopolis 2019! In any case the year of the edition should Always be added to the refeernce number, because sometimes the listed numbers have changed!
Thanks
Jochen

b) not in Varbanov
c) Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2018) 8.14.47.31 corr.
emiliyan_pavlov, Ebay, September 2018
This type was described as "altar, on which snake is coiling, head l." This new coin has far the best preserved rev. I have seen. And now my suspicion that the old description is not correct is proven. It can't be a snake alone because there are structures above the altar not compatible with a snake. So I think it is a basket or a similar container in which the snake is coiling up.

This type was described as "altar, on which snake is coiling, head l." This new coin has far the best preserved rev. I have seen. And now my suspicion that the old description is not correct is proven. It can't be a snake alone because there are structures above the altar not compatible with a snake. So I think it is a basket or a similar container set on the altar in which the snake is coiling up.
This type was until now only known for Severus. Another example for a parallel issue for members of the imperial family!

What immediately catches the eye is the clear Y at the beginning of the second part of the legend. This only occurs with the legends for Commodus at A - YR and the A at the end of the first legend part fits well. In the name KOMODOC the KO is missing and the M is only a stunted letter.
Actually, the obv. legend should be completed as AV KAI M A-YR KOMODOC. But the die cutter probably saw that there was not enough space available for KOMODOC. Then he broke off his legend and turned the planned (or already started!) R of A-YR into a mutilated M, so that he could still write MODOC.
Thus it is a legend error and the obv. legend is AV KAI M A - YMODOC.

Correction:
After an email from Mr. Jekov I checked this coin again and I believe that he is right: This type already exists. It is Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2028) No. 8.10.38.3 and it is Tyche. The coin shown here shows a strongly defaced Tyche.
With kind regards
