Title: The EB Gallery

After a hiatus of almost a year, I am finally getting back to photographing, cataloging, and uploading my ancient coin collection. These coins were lovingly collected by my father who passed away in 1983, and they have sat in a safe deposit box for 30+ years.

I'm currently working through a box of Roman Egypt. Here are some of my favorites:

I am done with Roman Egypt for now. Many of these coins are rough around the edges to say the least, but there is one coin in particular that I would like to bring to your attention. The edge is so corroded it reminds me of fine filigree with embedded lapis lazuli. You really have to view this one at full magnification.

Well, that just about wraps up the EB album of Late Romans, although there will no doubt be a few stragglers. I did my best with the attributions, given my limited knowledge and experience. There are several where I just left the reference as "Cf. XXX".

There have been some friendly comments, very much appreciated. I'll just point out 2 or 3 coins in passing:

This FEL TEMP is quite nice. Although somewhat diminished by the double-strike reverse, I like to imagine the spirit of the dying horseman lifting out of his body.

Constantius I was impeccably groomed. Did anyone notice the reverse legend? It reads, and I swear I am not making this up,

My favorites are not always the rarest or best preserved. I am especially fond of this Gallienus. He has a quizzical expression, and Mars on the reverse looks like he is stepping out of a time machine.

What's next? Well the next box of about 40 coins is labeled "Mostly Ptolemaic Egypt", but seems to include a few Roman imperials as well. Keep an eye out for some whopping big coins, there is an AE 43 of Ptolemy IV weighing in at 69 grams for example.

The box after that is labeled "Byzantine Empire". Mostly AE, but with a Zeno Solidus tucked in as well.

I'm done uploading the box marked "(mostly) Ptolemaic Egypt". In addition to the Ptolemies, there were some coins from Roman Egypt, a Domitian Sestertius, a Greek stater, and a couple of Roman Republicans. There was an almost featureless coin with two countermarks. And a very tiny coin, the flip of which reads "Vandals".

The Ptolemies themselves are quite challenging to catalog, but I did my best. The site http://ptolemybronze.com/ (http://ptolemybronze.com/) has a wealth of information.

Cataloging the Byzantines was pretty straight forward, as most of the coin flips included the Sear Byzantine number. Still, I'm sure there are some mistakes and would welcome any corrections.

Errett Bishop was a well-known mathematician (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Errett_Bishop (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Errett_Bishop)).
He was also a great father and a fun-loving guy who
would take us biking, surfing, snorkling, camping, etc.

He also enjoyed going to auctions, where he would often pick up
some interesting artifact or piece of art.
Our house was half junk-yard, half museum.
My father especially loved ancient coins, and he was one of the founding members of the
Ancient Coin Club here in San Diego.

Now the EB Collection is being sold, right here in your favorite coin shop.
Please take a look at the gallery (link below) and take note of any coins that strike your fancy.
Then watch for them to appear in the Forum Ancient coins shop.

I headed over to the FORVM shop and, with a few searches, saw a couple Romans from the EB Collection on offer. My 2 cents: using the search term “Errett Bishop Collection” turns up coins now on offer. I look forward to perusing the collection and, at some point, seeing what pops up at the store.
