It is very difficult to get a decent portrait on these coins so I do not mind the hole at all. Especially since it made the coin more affordable. ;)

Very nice coin and write-up, Alex. Sadly, I deaccessioned my English hammered coins via consignment to Forum a few years ago. My collecting resources were spread too thin, and I wanted to focus on the Roman Republic. I still find the English hammered series very interesting.

That is his hair, two curls on the left and five curls on the right (there ARE five if you look closely enough :)). It is one of the ways used to distinguish that this coin was actually struck by Henry II amid all the other rulers who issued coins around this time all in the name of Henry. ;)

That was his problem. He'd ruled jointly with his wife Mary, then she died, and he lost a chunk of his empire. Like most emperors, he didn't like it much.

Alex,
Great coin. I find these abstract representations fascinating.
Tracy
-
Thanks Tracy.
I also think that their designs are interesting, I think that the abstract designs must be deliberate rather than the inability to copy the original coin design. It's odd though how the designs degraded over the years. Perhaps though, if the coins were used primarily as offerings to the gods, accuracy of design was not thought to be necessary or important.

Out of curiosity, did you purchase it in 2022, or take delivery of it in 2022? :)

I actually took delivery of it on 30th December 2021, but since I didn't get round to photographing it until this morning I thought that was near as damn it to 2022 for my post. ;D
Alex
-
Wow, doesn't time fly. I hadn't realised that it's been almost a year since I posted any updates here on my gallery.
I bought my first Byzantine coin in June last year and have since started a small gallery of Justinian I issues, the last one being a scarce "Victory" Decannumium struck in Carthage. https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=179163
I have also added a few Roman coins, amongst others, throughout the year to my "Britain - Hammered" coins gallery. https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=6781
These are the two galleries that are taking up my attention at the moment.
Regards and Merry Xmas,

All very nice, I love Celtic horses. Historically, the Severus coin is super interesting, as well as lovely design.
Virgil
-
Thanks Virgil. I have found this gallery a really interesting one for me seeing how the coinage in Britain has evolved over time. And, although there are massive gaps in it, I have learned a lot from collecting the coins that are in it as many of these coins were never in my radar for most of my collecting life. I had always been focused on Roman coins but now I am fascinated by those other periods and wish I had become aware of them sooner. The Byzantine coinage is another collecting area that is completely new to me, but there I am strictly limiting myself to the coinage of Justinian.
*Alex
-
Alex, I totally get it, my interests are so wide it can be a hindrance, but I have accepted it. All coins are interesting in their own ways. British hammered is an area I love, but I really don't buy coins in that category. That doesn't mean I don't like them. LOL. My interests with coins I do buy is too wide, but I will just keep getting the coins I love when I find them and can afford them. Your gallery is a great one.

Always interested in Byzantine coins and their history despite owning just one gold histamenon. Paradoxically, Byzantine silver, generally, is significantly rarer than the gold, electrum, billon or copper coins of that empire. I love your collection of British coins naturally as a Londoner. I try hard to hide that fact behind my eclectic collection of ancient and world coins. I don't know if I'm fooling anyone in that respect. However, I do have a genuine interest in Americana and world coins as well as ancient coins.
-
Amazing. I checked the excavation reports from the JECM (Joint Expedition to Caesarea Maritima) from 1971-1987. Of the nearly 600 early Byzantine coins recorded, not a single one was silver, and only one was gold. Great rarities, all of yours.
Best regards, Jimi

Yes, indeed! There is a very interesting CoinWeek article by the inimitable Mike Markowitz that addresses the paradox of Byzantine silver. Surely, we expect silver coins to be more abundant and less valuable than gold ones because of the uneven silver/gold ratio. Paradoxically, Byzantine gold is often common and Byzantine silver coins usually scarce, sometimes almost non-existent.

Thanks everyone.
I have collected Roman coins for a very long time, over 60 years, and I have been interested in British coins for almost as long. However. I only started collecting Byzantine coins, specifically Justinian I, last year and reading about and finding those coins has been a welcome occupation for me.
