Title: A Taste of the Orient/My Oriental Gallery
Post by: Stkp on March 18, 2018, 01:14:27 am
I recently visited the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia to see the "Terracota Warriors" exhibit of six life-size figures from the mauseleum of Emperor Qin Shihuang (who died in 210 B.C.E.) in Xi’an, China. Here is one of my photos:

I see that Joe is now offering quite a few oriental coins. I have a number of oriental albums in my gallery, mostly Qing Dynasty Chinese (which are the only ones that I ever collected systematically). The vast majority were bought for pocket change years ago, when Fischer's Ding was the go-to catalog, with references to Schjöth. This was before David Hartill published his Qing Cash. I still dabble in oriental coins from time to time. I just added this one that I bought from Forum Ancient Coins:

Vietnam (Annam). Later Lê Dynasty Thánh Tông (1442-1497), Barker 35.1-35.12; Toda 57.

Unfortunately, I don't have access to Barker, and thus have not been able to pinpoint the exact type within Barker 35. If anyone with the book would complete the attribution it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Steve,

The oriental part of your gallery is great and interesting.

Title: Re: A Taste of the Orient/My Oriental Gallery -- Recent Forvm Purchases
Post by: Stkp on April 02, 2018, 11:15:15 am
I just bought a bulk lot of unattributed Chinese cash coins from Forvm Ancient Coins. I am having a lot of fun attributing them (accompanied with the usual frustrations in trying to distinguish the subtle differences described by Hartill, especially on less than perfect coins). I will be posting many of them to my gallery in drips and drabs between my other numismatic activities. Among them were five Tang Dynasty Kai Yuans, representing three Hartill sub-types (at least one from each of the early, middle and late periods of the Tang). They are now in my gallery:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-145282 (middle, Hartill 14.4)
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-145283 (late, Hartill 14.8)

I remember George Fischer, he was a great guy in DAWN (Denver Area World Numismatists).  It was nice to see his enthusiasm for Chinese coins, and everything else he collected (Biblical, coins with "George" on them.)  Resquat in Pace.  I diverge, but I do so because I think we would all like to be remembered for our friendship, but also our expertise.  We are all moving through history, these coins however, are history.  I don't collect Chinese, but I did check out this thread because of George.

I never had the pleasure of meeting George, but your post reminded me of the days when Fischer's Ding was my primary reference for Chinese Cash, as Schjoth was difficult to obtain and David Hartill had not yet published. Pleasant memories... Stkp

It has been something like eight months since I bought a bulk lot of Chinese cash coins from Forvm, and quite some time since I posted any coins from the lot to my gallery. Just this weekend I (finally) posted two more, both Northern Song issues of Zhe Zong (1086-1100) under different reign titles:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-151844 Reign Title Yuan Fu (1098-1100)
and
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-151843 Reign Title Yuan You (1086-1093)

I will try to accelerate the pace of my work on this lot, although it competes with my other numismatic activities. My intention is to post a comprehensive summary of the lot once I am finished.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-152104
and
Emperor Hui Zong (1101-1125), Reign Title Sheng Song (1101-1106), Hartill 16.377, Schjoth 609
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-152092

Due to their dark coloration, they don't photograph well and look better in hand.

Great stuff!
I will enjoy looking through it.
I’ve been away for quite a while. Glad to see some interest in Chinese cast coins.
