Title: Domitian PONT denarius - probably rare one
Post by: timka on February 16, 2017, 05:44:19 am
Hi!

Please kindly help with this denarius of Domitian - I dont have new RIC, so I am stuck with its id and respective rarity. From what I figured in wildwinds, it should be in between RIC 6 and RIC 9, as all those in between are missing in wildwinds, may be including this one. Also, I did not find this one with such ob/rev legends+ garlanded altar in acsearch, BM online, numismatics. org, etc and here in the Forum gallery too!  It seems there should be not so many of this type around!

Ob. IMP CAES DOMITIANVS AVG PONT - laur head right
Rev. PP COS VII DES VIII - garlanded altar

18mm - 3.02 g - 6h

RIC - (?)

Thank you for your time.

Z.

Very rare - RIC 7 (unique). No update to rarity in the RIC II Addenda, so second specimen known.

Hi David! Thank you for a prompt update!...so, it appeared an interesting one)...

Though the flan is a bit cut on the edges, it seems that V/Y is engraved in a peculiar way, - very slim and elongated to the tip. I presume this coin also belongs to that very series where the 'greek influence' was evidenced.  I saw a link to an article here on the Forum http://www.jhecoins.com/articles/article01.htm\

Thanks much for your time, David.

The one specimen quoted and illustrated by RIC is apparently from the same dies as yours: new RIC 7, pl. 117 = Paris catalogue 9, pl. XCI = Cohen 370 = old RIC 9.

The old RIC, however, wrongly rearranged the rev. legend COS VII DES VIII P P, moving P P from the beginning to the end.

Thank you for your note, Curtis!...that is why I could not find it in old RIC - the rev. legend was arranged wrongly there!

Alberto, THANK YOU!

the same same REV not the same OB

...yes, altar is the same on REV, but the legend is different on both reverses too ...have a look where PP is placed in both cases on reverse... it's important feature in proper attribution of this type
