So I picked up this provincial of Nero today at a coin show that copies the DECVRSIO type. I always wanted the Imperial version but could never find one I could afford. Started researching it and came up with very little! Apparently this provincial is very rare. RPC cites 2 examples and the few I've seen online all have the same countermark. They are also all in the same condition. Can someone help me out with the legends? None of the resources I've checked list it.

Better in hand!
Thanks!
-
This one is proving more difficult then I thought! Anyone have RPC to give me the inscriptions?

Thanks! It's a fascinating type and a tough one to research!
-
With the exchange rate at the moment I'm finding it hard to justify buying coins, but this little gem (OK maybe not a gem ;)) caught my eye. It was cheap enough and quite scarce. I've never been able to find one at shows and I think it must be scarcer than listed.
Vespasian denarius with Cista Mystica reverse. Minted in Rome most probably for eastern circulation. It's very much in keeping with the larger Cistophoric tetradrachms previously minted for the east. Reminds me of Antony's cistophorii and those of the questors.

Nice coin Jay. I have not seen one of those before.
-
This is one of those odd types Vespasian minted which on the surface has no good explanation other than it being a restoration type, in this case copying a quinarius struck by Augustus.
Nice find Jay!

Thanks David, I had forgotten about the quinarii with the same reverse! Blinded I guess by those nice big silver Tetradrachms! 8)

Yes, the first coin is Ephesus, BY mint mark COS II issue, fairly rare.

Brutus gold stater with lictors:

It's a most impressive specimen nearly UNC with loads of mint luster and almost perfectly centered. I just can't stop holding it! Tried various methods to photograph it and settled with this one as it brings out and shows all of the wonderful folds and feathers. Enjoy!
It matches the denarius already in my collection:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/numiswiki/view.asp?key=Siglos
-
Hi Joe, I did use the numiswiki page to determine it was type IV but going further between type IV b or c but I'm still not sure. I think a lot more research has to be done on these types because just like the article says, even dealers can't determine the difference sometimes.
-
I would attribute your siglos as Carradice Type IV A/B, Artaxerxes I - Artaxerxes II, c. 455 - 375 B.C. I believe your coin was struck with worn dies, making it difficult to distinguish between IV A or IV B. I am confident it is not IV C.
-
Much appreciated Joe! The tag actually says IIIb but that must have been a typo because he clearly doesn't have a spear and holds the dagger.
-
Added a Vespasian denarius with bull reverse RIC 841. Sources say it is scarce but I've had quite the time trying to track one of these down. I think it's quite rare. The same type is much more common for Titus.
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-134838
Have a look!
-
Very nice example of the type!
However, I will quibble with the 'bull' attribution. I'm in no respects a farmer, but I think that is certainly a cow! To be fair, the sex of the animal on more than a few dies is questionable. The only conclusions I've reached about it is that the Titus Caesar examples tend to show a 'bull', while Vespasian's depict a 'cow'. And Mattingly's 'Cow of Myron' conjecture is most certainly wrong.
Also, IMHO, the Titus Caesar 'bull' is slightly rarer than Vespasian's 'cow'.
-
Thanks David. I've heard the different theories between cows and bulls. Some like mine quite clearly show horns, others it's not so clear.
From my searches for the type I've seen the opposite, Titus is easier to find than the Vespasian! :) Although I don't have a Titus...
-
Thanks David. I've heard the different theories between cows and bulls. Some like mine quite clearly show horns, others it's not so clear.
And it doesn't help, depending on the breed, cows can have horns! Which of course does not make it any easier sorting these reverse types out.
-
Cows with horns, never heard that. Some research is in order on the types of Roman cows!
-
Cows with horns, never heard that. Some research is in order on the types of Roman cows!
To be honest, I never knew cows could have horns too until I researched the type a few years ago. I was trying to find a true Vespasian 'bull', but never did. In the new RIC the type is described as a 'heifer' for Vespasian and 'bull' for Titus Caesar, although they admit the sex can be ambiguous.
To give an idea what we should be looking for when trying to find a 'bull' reverse, take a look at my Titus Caesar specimen. https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-49947
I don't think I need to point out why it's a bull!
-
Nice example David.
You may be right that it's simply an agricultural type and could be either a bull or cow. It fits in with the yoked oxen from COS VIII and other agricultural reverses.
-
Thanks Jay.
It's possible the 'yoked oxen' type is a reference to Vespasian extending the pomerium, but that is a topic for another thread!
-
He did like to copy old types.
It would be interesting to compare the two side by side with a write up of the theories of why they were copied. I need to research the copy of the Antony prow type since it combines my two collecting interests.
-
Great example Jay!

I see several different RIC references for this coin with COS VII DES VIII P P. It came listed as RIC II 96, I have it attributed to RIC II 26.
-
Nice. BOT?
-
Very nice, Jay, from different dies than mine.
I think I have some coin from the same engraver in my collection.
Cheers
Alberto
-
Thanks Joe I will add to BOT shortly.
Alberto I actually used yours for attribution. I don't have the new RIC, or the old one for that matter so I rely on the dealer tags or my own detective work online. Sometimes it works to my benefit when dealers don't catch things that make the type more sought after. For this one I've found several different references but I can't seem to tell what the difference is between them, unless it's just old numbers. ???
-
Your coin it's definitely RIC 26, since it has type "C" legend (IMP CAES DOMITIANVS AVG P M) on obverse and COS VII DES VIII P P (without TR P) on reverse.
It was #14 in the old edition.
Cheers
Alberto
-
By the way RIC 96 was certainly wrong: its reverse would be TR POT COS VIII P P.
I have one in my collection, not in the gallery though.

Finally got a copy of RIC so I'm going through my Flavians and updating the references. While doing that I'm reshooting some old coins. The new pictures are much more "alive" than the old ones. Here's a pretty rare Titus Judea Capta denarius, nicely centered with full legends and original find patina around the devices:

That is really interesting Titus Judea Capta. It so happens I just bought a Titus Judea Capta 2 days ago. I will post it soon. It is a different type from yours.

Look forward to seeing it!
-
Just spent a few hours going through my Flavian coins updating to the new RIC numbers. I was surprised at how many mistakes I found copying attributions from dealer flips. I don't know what took me so long to get it, it's an invaluable resource! They should all be correct now with RIC number in the title. Now the question is how to sort them? By RIC #, Emperor, type...?
-
Added a very common Domitian denarius that came from an old collection. Super dark toning with some encrustations around letters. It's a wonderful portrait. Is that a gorgon visible on Minerva's breast plate? Very high relief, especially the legends.
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-136642
I never really bothered with Domitian before because of the standard Minerva reverses. It was difficult to get excited about them, but I must say his portraits are always outstanding. I'm actively searching for the now!
-
I collect literally everything struck by Domitian.
If you stick to the Imperial series, I value his coinage between 84 and 88 A.D. the best in style.
For different reasons earlier and later issues are in less appealing to me, with some exception.

this coin reminds me of a paper i once contemplated writing regarding the influence of the Greek colonies of southern Italy upon the early art of the Roman Republic. the idea is not a radical one, as even Livy made the obvious comparison over 2000 years ago. but this particular denarius drives the point home rather strikingly i think, and not coincidentally either.
an apparent ancestor of L. Calpurnius Piso was captured after the Battle of Cannae and was held at Taras until his return to Rome in 212 BC. this is the same year that the Ludi Apollinares, the annual festival to Apollo, was first celebrated at Rome in July, at the urging of the praetor Calpurnius and supposedly in response to Sibylline scripture and the prophesies of the seer Marcius.
whether any of this is historically accurate or not, the influence is hard to deny when we compare Jay’s coin to the torch racing scene on this Tarentine didrachm from the middle of the 3rd century BC (Vlasto 939, image from CNG)...

Excellent! I love southern Italian coins and the connection as you say is obvious! Nice coin!

it is a nice coin, and i only wish it were mine! but even this coin was a revival of a previous style from Taras, as seen on this rare didrachm from 150 years earlier. it has all of the same attributes... galloping horse, torch, etc, so it probably has to do with the same festival to Apollo.
this specimen (below) is from Vlasto's own collection, #362 and is also from CNG.
i have often said that if i didn't collect Magna Graecian coins i would probably focus on Republicans, and this coin of yours is one of the main reasons why (along with the delightful 'Muse' series!).
in the introduction to his book 'A History of Roman Literature' (1877), Charles Thomas Cruttwell writes "The traditional account of the origin of literature at Rome, accepted by the Romans themselves, is that it was entirely due to contact with Greece."
so there really is more similarity than difference between the two series, imo.

You should reconsider writing it and submit it to KOINON! I would be thrilled to include your essay and will assist in any way I can (ILL books, etc.).
