The big changes came with Karoly/Charles Robert, so it makes sense to begin volume IV with the Angevins and to place Vencel and Otto at the end of the Arpads. How many volumes to you project to reach the end? Will it end before dated coinage, or continue through Lajos/Louis II and Janos/John Zapolyai/Szapolyai? Stkp

I am continuing to go through my gallery and revise my attributions/descriptions of my medieval Hungarian coins based on Joe's excellent book (and other books that have been published or acquired since my original postings). With some minor tweaking (and I have a couple of questions that I have asked of Joe concerning specific coins), I have now completed updating my album on the coinage of Coloman/Kálmán:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=2235

As of this writing, I have only studied Volume I (Volume II is in the mail) through the reign of Kálmán. The book (a) identifies varieties of the coinage that are not listed in the earlier major catalogs (Huszar, CNH/Rethy and Eh/Unger); (b) contains both scale and enlarged photos of each coin type together with line drawings; (c) identifies by line drawing all of the different sigla (small privy marks) associated with each type; (d) provides a rarity rating and historic rarity ratings utilized in prior works; and (e) provides average weights and size ranges. I heartily recommend the book for anyone who is seriously interested in the coinage that is covered by the volume. Congratulations to Joe and his co-authors for putting together a wonderful volume.

Moving along, I have completed my revisions of the coinage of István/Stephen II (1116-1131) based in large part on Joe/Quadran's book: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=2252 (just the first 3 coins in the album). The revision project gives me the opportunity to take out and closely examine coins that I last handled many years ago. It is a re-acquaintance with old friends. Stkp-

Joe,

I retrieved Volume II from the post office on Saturday. I have not started to work with it yet, as I have not completed my revision of my descriptions/attributions of the coins covered by Volume I (I have four more coins left to go and expect to be working with Volume II before the new year). However, I read through the text of Volume II and randomly examined the catalog entries. My preliminary impression is that the book is as impressive in its detail and clarity as Volume I is. I look forward to the publication of Volume III and the completion of your coverage of the Árpádian dynasty!

I have noticed, by the way, that various coin dealers have already begun to reference their offerings to your catalog numbers. The same dealers ignore completely the other recent catalogs that have been published that are of a significantly lower quality (Frynas and Adamovszky). I expect that your books will supplant Huszár as the standard.

Stkp

P.S. I appreciate your willingness to answer the private questions I sent you concerning Volume I and a number of my coins that are covered by that volume. I will again revise my descriptions/attributions based on your answers. Take your time. Stkp

Dear Steve,

It is good news you received the Vol. II., I hope you are like it :)

We start this work an approximately 14 year ago...
We have studied more than 50,000 coins from the different Museums, more than a hundred hoards, and so many Catalogs of the different Auctions site, and many many private collections...
Our goal was to do a great and systematic catalog, which is useful to the scientists and the collectors and also to the dealers...

I hope we do it well...  ;)

Joe,

I finished the revision of my gallery based on volume I. That volume covered 33 coins. I have a very few additional questions comments that I will send to you.

Thanks, Joe. I have revised several of my descriptions based on your email messages, and given you credit for the assistance:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-39855
and
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-39868
and
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-47642
and
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-50171

It is always gratifying to find unrecorded varieties of a coin (even where the variety is merely a sigla mark).

Joe, I have been revising my descriptions of my anonymous denarii based on volume 2 of your book. So far, I have completed my revision of the Class I Anonymous Denarii (15 coins): https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=2252. Volume 2 is, so far, as clear and easy to use as volume 1, and equally thorough. There are no unrecorded varieties or sigla amongst my coins in this group. Stkp

Joe,

I finally completed my revision of my 12th century (post-Kalman) album, based on your book:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=2252
I am now ready for the publication of Volume III.

By the way, I notice that it is no longer just the Hungarian dealers that are referencing coins to your book. CNG is now also doing so.

I have to retract this as I glanced too quickly at the CNG auction. Sorry... Stkp

I enjoyed going through the collection. Many were coins that I hadn't handled in years. I am always moving forward with new coins, new areas of interest, so it is nice now and then to go back and systematically examine older holdings. Stkp
