The Begtimurids, also known as Armenshahs, Akhlatshahs, Sukmanias and Atabegs of Armenia were a Turkoman dynasty that ruled the Northern shores of Lake Van from their capital of Akhlat (Khlat). Despite ruling for over one hundred years, few coins of this dynasty exist. Coins were struck only in the name of one ruler. These coins circulated mostly locally around Lake Van. That is, the surrounding cities as Khoy, Mush, Salmast, Sasun and Akhlat. However, specimens have been found farther north in the area of Ani and Dvin, indicating these might have penetrated into North-Eastern Armenia.

After Begtimurid collapse, their territories went to the Ayyubids. It is of interest to note that there are some Ayyubid coins from Mesopotamia that bear the title "Shaharmen."
