FRANCIA, on other coins ALAMANNIA GAVDIVM ROMANORVM, the type same as on above coin. [a trophy, near which is seated a woman in the attitude of grief. On the obverse, CONSTANTINVS P F AVG, laureate head of Constantine the Great; gold.] Gold of Crispus.
The author of Doctrina says: "From this coin we clearly perceive, that the exploits of the father are recorded on the mintage of the son." But surely this is not very extraordinary, since it was Crispus who gained more than one of the victories alluded to in the forefoing legend, acting in his quality of Caesar, and as general in command of an expeditionary armay, under his father, against these two nations, whose united revolt from the Roman yoke, he effectually supressed in AD 320.
FRANCIA - The country thus named was Francia Orientalis, lying between the Maine and the Rhine, anteceedently forming a part of Germania. Alamannia was a region chiefly lying between the Danube and the Atmuhl. one of the northern tributaries of the Danube. At present all that was called Alamannia is included in Germany.
