Caligula 's Provincial Coinage

By Joe Geranio

See Coins of Caligula For Sale in the Forum Ancient Coins Shop

We mostly know the Roman Imperial Coinage at first glance.  Lets take a look at some photos I have collected over the years of some of Gaius Caligula 's wonderful Rhetoric/ Propaganda even in the provinces.  He wanted to show familial assimilation and dynastic continuation.  He also has some radiate attributions that are wonderful.  Lets start with some radiate attributions.  It has taken years to put some quality

Caligulan provincials together.  Most are crude and not in very good shape.

Note "T" in "ET" raised to make room for possible radiate crown?  Could Caligula have been first living Princeps to appear radiate on IMPERIAL coinage?

CALIGULA WITH RADIATE ATTRIBUTION

LYDIA, Magnesia ad SipylumGaius (Caligula), with Germanicus and Agrippina SeniorAD 37-41. (22mm, 5.20 g, 12h). Radiate head of Gaius right / Germanicus, with toga drawn up over head (capite velato), standing facing on left, holding patera; to right, Agrippina Senior (as Demeter) standing left, holding grain ears and scepter. SPANISH MINTS- moneyer 's  tell us what princeps coin was struck under.

Only Known pre-principate portrait of Gaius Caligula, struck under Tiberius.

SPAIN, Carthago Nova. Tiberius, with Gaius (Caligula) as Caesar. AD 14-37. As (29mm, 11.71 g, 3h). Struck AD 33-37. Laureate head of Tiberius left / Bare head of Gaius left. RPC 182; SNG Copenhagen 502. cngcoins.com

This is a very important issue, struck under Tiberius. It is the only accepted (because of the inscription) pre-accession issue we have of Gaius Caligula, there are no accepted portraits in the round or on any other numismatics. For problems with the dating of Tiberian Coinage see RPC and A. Banti and L. Simonetti, Corpus Nummorum Romanorum (XIII Florence: 1977 pp. 141-50 deal with dating to 34 A.D. (PolliniJWAG, note 28 for more explanation. Also: "Aspects of the Principate of Tiberius", Historical comments on the Colonial coinage issued outside Spain, Michael Grant- The American Numismatic Society - Numismatic Notes and Monographs(1950) There are some issues with inscriptions and dating in Banti Simonetti. Dated to 32-33 A.D.?   There are many candidates for a portrait of Caligula in the round, but no scholar will attest to the fact due to no inscribed base or inscription being found with sculpture.  Therefore, this coin is very important to portrait specialists.  It reminds me of the importance of numismatics in all portrait disciplines, unfortunately this issue is usually found with a crude type portrait for Caligula, and is of little help with hairstyle and physiognomy.      RPC 182; SNG Copenhagen 502.

The grandson of Herod I, Agrippa I, so-named in honor of the victor of Actium, spent much of his youth in the Roman imperial court. Popular with the imperial family, including the emperor Tiberius, Agrippa passed much of his time in the home of Antonia Minor, the mother of Germanicus and the future emperor Claudius. There, the boys became great friends, and as an older man, Agrippa became attached to the future emperor Gaius, being appointed governor of the territories of Batanaea and Trachonitis upon Gaius accession. Unfortunately contemporary politics placed a significant strain on the relationship between the king and Rome. In AD 39 Agrippa's uncle, Antipas, was accused of plotting with the Parthians and was exiled. Agrippa's loyalty gained him his uncle's forfeited territories. In AD 40 renewed riots between Greeks and Jews broke out in Alexandria, and Gaius, clearly unhappy with his Jewish subjects, provocatively ordered the installation of a statue of himself within the Holy of Holies in Jerusalem. Agrippa, who had been unsuccessfully involved in trying to quell similar riots in Alexandria before, sought to emphasize his loyalty to local Roman officials by striking coinage which commemorated his long-standing friendship with Gaius and, especially, Germanicus. Based on the dupondii struck in honor of the emperor's father Germanicus, this coin includes the great general riding in his triumphal car in honor of his recovery of the standards lost by Varus, rather than portraying Agrippa himself, an identification emphasized by the specific inclusion of the word NOMISMA in the legend. By avoiding self promotion, Agrippa hoped to successfully navigate the treacherous waters which might result in his own removal from power.

Meshorer 121; Hendin 1245; RPC I 4983.

Agrippa had a close relationship with both Gaius (Caligula) and Claudius, in part helping to secure the rule of the latter in the uncertain days following his unexpected rise to the purple by counseling the understandably shaken Claudius and entreating the Senate to support him. Indeed, his relationship with Claudius was sufficiently close that Josephus (Ant. xix. 5.1) records that among the new emperor's first acts was the publication of an edict guaranteeing Agrippas kingdom (with the title great king) and granting the territory of Chalcis to Agrippa's elder brother Herod.

Burnett believed the scene on the reverse represented the consecration of this treaty in Rome, a treaty which is specifically mentioned by Josephus (He also made a league with this Agrippa, confirmed by oaths, in the middle of the Forum in the city of Rome. [Jospehus, Ant. xix.5.1]). Although Suetonius (Suetonius, Claud. 25.5) also places the rites of the treaty (or fetial ceremony), which included the sacrifice of a pig, in the Roman Forum, Burnett argued that they instead took place at the Temple of Jupiter Capitolinus. Following Burnettï's interesting argument, this rare Judaean bronze not only represents a religious ceremony before the holiest temple of Rome, but accurately depicts a victimarius (sacrificial assistant) about to kill a pig.

MACEDON, PhilippiGaius (Caligula)37-41 AD. 16mm (4.17 g). Bare head right / Priests plowing right. Cf. RPC 1657 (Tiberius) dark green patina. Unpublished for Caligula.

As there is no readable legend on the obverse of this coin, attribution as Caligula is conjectural and based strictly on the style of the portrait which clearly resembles Caligula.
As we know there is only one pre-principate portrait of Caligula from Carthago Nova with Tiberian portrait.  I thought this portrait was Caligula years ago and at one time was said to have been Augustus in catalog.?

It appears that the names of locals on the coins of Philadelphia do not represent magistrates in charge of a specific office, but rather citizens who may have sponsored the production of a certain series of coins. Artemon, in this case, may have dedicated a shrine to the emperor 's mother, and celebrated the event with a coin issue.

LYDIA, PhiladelphiaGaius (Caligula). AD 37-41. (18mm, 4.54 g, 12h). Melanthos, priest of Germanicus. Bare head right; six-rayed star behind / Laureate and draped busts of the Dioscuri, jugate, right. RPC 3018; BMC 52; SNG von Aulock 3071. Good VF, brown patina. Very rare only three cited in RPC, only one in CoinArchives (Lanz 150, lot 220). Perhaps the finest known.

RPC (p. 492) notes. A very large number of magistrates sign the coins (of Philadelphia) under Caligula: fifteen are certainly attested for his four-year reign. They give themselves various different descriptions and titles: priest of Germanicus, Olympic victorphilopatris, grammateus, and in a number of cases philokaisar. The impression created by this variety is that the persons are mentioned just as individuals rather than as holders of any specific magistracy; alternatively, one might think in terms of a board of some kind, as at Hierapolis.

Perhaps the 11th known, with the majority in museum collections.

The youngest child of Germanicus and Agrippina Senior, Julia Livilla was born on the island of Lesbos during her parents tour of the eastern provinces. She is best known, like her sisters Agrippina Junior and Drusilla, for the alleged incestuous relationship she had with her brother, Caligula. Suetonius, the earliest historian to make this scandalous accusation, claims that the incest even took place during banquets (Gai xxiv), when much company was present, and that the emperor placed each of them [his sisters] in turns below him, while his wife reclined above him. It is telling that the tales of incest go unmentioned by historians such as Seneca and Philo, who actually lived during the reign of Caligula, and there is serious scholarly doubt if there is any truth to these claims. Nonetheless, the tales were often repeated by later chroniclers, and the incestuous relationship between Caligula and his sisters is fixed in popular imagination as one of great scandals of the Roman emperors. cngcoins.com

REGARDING RPC 182 ISSUE This is a very important issue, struck under Tiberius.
