Vexillum

The vexillum (plural: vexilla) was a Roman legionary standard topped with a flag. Unlike the horizontally-flown flags most commonly used today, the vexillum ensign was draped vertically from a horizontal cross-bar.  A vexilum ornamented with a chi rho ligature, or Christogram, is a labarum.
