Manlia Scantilla

Please add updates or make corrections to the NumisWiki text version as appropriate.

MANLIA SCANTILLA was the wife of Didius Julianus, and bore him a daughter, Didia Clara. In A.D.193, on the same day that Didius Julianus became Emperor, she was proclaimed Augusta by a decree of the Senate. Her happiness was short lived, the imperial titles were taken away from both her and her daughter by Septimius Severus when Didius Julianus was put to death a few weeks later and she died in obscurity.

On her coins, which are all extremely rare, her titles are MANL (or MANLIA) SCANTILLA AVG.
The silver and bronze coins have on their reverse IVNO REGINA, Juno standing veiled, a patera in her right hand, a hasta in her left and a peacock at her feet.
