Type

A definition of a part of a Roman coin. All coins have two sides: the obverse and the reverse. The design found on the reverse is called the type.

For example, during the reign of an emperor or empress, it is likely that many different coins were struck. Usually, the portait of the ruler is always displayed of the obverse of the coin. But on the reverse, many different designs or types can be found. To aid in communications between collectors and scholars of coins, the reverse type is referred to along with the ruler's name.
