AR (serrate) Denarius of Mn. Aquillius Mn.f. Mn.n. 71 BC., Roman Republic - draped bust of Virtus right, wearing crested helmet, ornamented at the side with feather, III.VIR (tresvir) behind, VIRTVS before / the consul Man. Aquillius standing facing in military dress, head right, with right hand raising kneeling and slumped Sicilia, shield in left hand, MN AQVIL on right, MN.F.MN.N on left, SICIL in ex (3.71 grams, 21/20 mm) Rome mint 71 AD., Crawford 401/1 Aquillia 2, Very fine, banker"s mark, bright metal, estimate $200 Consul Man. Aquillius restoring the glory of Sicily at 101 BC., an interesting historical type Man. Aquillius (the moneyer"s grandfather) was co-consul with Marius in 101 BC. and was sent to Sicily to suppress the slave rebellion of Salvius (the second slave war in Sicily), which cut the grain supply to Rome and threatened famine. He succeeded the next year and this coin type commemorates his valor (Virtus). It is also the first time the III VIR triumviral title appears on coinage.
